Dramatic CAF triumphs for Merrikh, Tetouan

Sudanese El-Merrikh and Moroccans Moghreb Tetouan staged dramatic weekend comebacks to snatch CAF Champions League last-32 places.

Both clubs triumphed 3-0 at home and overcame surprise two-goal preliminary-round first-leg losses in the premier African club football competition.

Other clubs who advanced included Nigerians Enyimba and Kano Pillars, South Africans Kaizer Chiefs, Kenyans Gor Mahia and Guineans Kaloum.

Merrikh left it uncomfortably late against Tanzanians Azam in steamy Omdurman with Kenya-born Allan Wanga grabbing the tie-deciding third goal two minutes into stoppage time.

After Bakri Abdel Gadir put Merrikh ahead, the Sudanese fluffed a penalty and did not level on aggregate until Ahmed Abdullah struck five minutes from time.

Hyper-ambitious Merrikh are coached by Franco-Italian Diego Garzitto, who guided Democratic Republic of Congo giants TP Mazembe to the 2009 Champions League title.

They spared no expense before tackling Azam, camping in Egypt and Qatar and playing a warm-up against Bundesliga outfit Schalke.

Success was huge relief for Tetouan after a disastrous 2014 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, where they lost on penalties to New Zealand supposed no-hopers Auckland City.

The North Africans punished Malian visitors Club Olympique Bamako early on with goals from Mouhsine Iajour and captain Mohamed Abarhoun levelling the aggregate score inside 26 minutes.

But Moghreb had to wait until 11 minutes from time before Zouhair Naim scored to eliminate Champions League debutants Bamako.

Soweto side Kaizer Chiefs ground out a 1-0 win over Township Rollers in Botswana, having taken a surprisingly slim 2-1 advantage into the return match.

Chiefs gained plenty of possession on a poor pitch to silence the sell-out 16,000 home crowd and Siyabonga Nkosi was the match-winner via a first-half volley.

George Odhiambo rescued Gor Mahia, who squeezed through despite a 3-2 defeat by CNaPS Sport in Madagascar.

Nairobi-based Gor advanced on away goals having won 1-0 in the Kenyan capital two weeks ago.

Ali Abondo equalised during the opening half in Antananarivo, but Gor trailed by two goals at half-time and appeared doomed until Odhiambo scored in stoppage time.

Ivorians Sewe Sport, 2014 CAF Confederation Cup runners-up to Egyptians Al-Ahly, bowed out after drawing 1-1 with Guineans Kaloum in neutral Bamako.

The fixture was moved from Conakry because of the Ebola virus, which has claimed 9,177 lives since late 2013, predominantly in West African states Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Congolese Kabongo Kassongo nudged Kaloum ahead on the stroke of half-time and Frank Guinza levelled on 74 minutes.

Sewe, who lost goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo and midfielders Christian Kouame and Roger Assale to a recent Mazembe buying spree, trailed 2-1 from the first encounter.

Months of preparations under Dutch coach Ruud Krol came to nought for Libyans Al-Ahly Tripoli as they fell 1-0 at Egyptians Smouha and lost the tie on penalties.

Convincing first-leg victories had virtually assured Enyimba and Pillars of progress and both won again.

Gambo Muhammed bagged a brace as Kano outplayed South Sudanese visitors Al-Malakia 3-0 and an Andrew Abalogu goal earned Enyimba a 1-0 win over Buffles Borgou in Benin.
