Romero named as new Malaga boss

Malaga on Wednesday named Marcelo Romero as their new manager, the Uruguayan's appointment coming 24 hours after Juande Ramos resigned from the struggling Spanish side.

Romero steps up after three years on Malaga's technical staff. He coached the first team for three months in 2015-2016 when the then manager Javi Gracia was suspended.

He played for Malaga from 2001 to 2007 and on the international stage represented his country at the 2002 World Cup.

Former Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur manager Ramos had returned to Malaga for a second spell in charge in May.

He had been under pressure after his side finished the year with just one win in their last seven games in all competitions.
