Monaco winning run comes to an end in derby

Monaco's three-match winning run came to an abrupt end when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Nice in the French Riviera local derby on Saturday.

After an indifferent start to the season, the Principality club had begun to put a string of victories together, but a seventh-minute strike from a Carlos Eduardo free-kick condemned them to their second home defeat of the campaign.

After a Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen and league successes against admittedly modest opposition in Guingamp and Montpellier, they appeared to have turned the corner under new coach Leonardo Jardim.

But an early goal and another lacklustre performance saw them slump to 12th, on 10 points from eight games, while Nice rose to fifth, level on points with fourth-paced Paris Saint Germain, who travel to Toulouse later in the day.

Sunday sees a top-of-the-table clash as third-placed Saint Etienne travel to Marseille.

Monaco's next outing is a perilous trip to Russia where they take on Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League on Wednesday.
