Dougie Freedman has left his post as Bolton Wanderers manager "by mutual consent" after a disappointing start to the Championship season, the English second-tier club announced via Twitter on Friday.

Bolton, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2012, are currently second from bottom in the Championship after taking just five points from their first 10 matches.

Freedman, 40, left Crystal Palace to join Bolton two years ago, but although the club from northwest England narrowly missed out on a play-off place in his first campaign, they finished 14th last season.

"Dougie has worked tirelessly off the field to improve the infrastructure of the football club. Unfortunately, recent results on the pitch have not reflected all his work off it," said chairman Phil Gartside in a statement on the club's official website.

"The club has faced a difficult time following our relegation from the Premier League and Dougie has helped to restructure the club in order for it to become successful again under ever-tightening constraints.

"I would like to thank Dougie personally for all his commitment and efforts for Bolton Wanderers."
