River Plate make Sudamericana final after super-derby win

River Plate won the Argentine super-derby Thursday by edging arch rivals Boca Juniors 1-0 to reach the final of the Copa Sudamericana, where they will take on Colombian side Atletico Nacional.

The Medellin based club beat Brazil's Sao Paulo a day earlier winning a penalty shoot-out 4-1 after their semi-final had ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Neither of the finalists has ever clinched the trophy, considered to be South America's second most prestigious after the Copa Libertadores.

River Plate, coached by former Monaco playmaker Marcelo Gallardo, saved a penalty at their packed Monumental stadium before clinching the winner with a 16th minute strike from Leonardo Pisculichi.

As the first leg of the semi-final had ended 0-0 at Boca's Bonbonera stadium, the single goal margin was enough to see River Plate through

Atletico Nacional host the first-leg of the final on December 3rd in Medellin with the return-leg in Buenos Aires on December 12th.
