German FA boss wants to improve FIFA's image

Wolfgang Niersbach, the president of the German Football Association (DFB), wants to help improve the image of world football's governing body FIFA, if voted onto it's executive committee next year.

The 64-year-old is hoping to be presented as Europe's candidate to join FIFA's executive committee when the continent's governing body UEFA meets in Vienna in May.

FIFA's image has come under recent heavy fire in the media with allegations of corruption over the awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar.

"We need an institution that stands for credibility, professionalism and integrity," said Niersbach, who wants to succeed his DFB predecessor Theo Zwanziger on FIFA's executive committee, in Frankfurt on Tuesday.

"The main goal of any newcomer has to be to try to bring FIFA's image back to being positive.

"Objectively, you have to find that this has not been managed by various events in the past."

Niersbach is already on UEFA's executive committee, as well as running the world champion's domestic association, and he admits it will be a tall order to add a third role with FIFA.

"First of all, we have to see if there are multiple candidates for the spots available," said Niersbach.

"It's quite a lot when someone is engaged in these important roles."
