Nigeria impress in All-Africa Games qualifier

Nigeria began their 2015 All-Africa Games football qualifying campaign impressively with a 4-1 away triumph over Gabon at the weekend.

Junior Ajayi scored early in each half, Oghenekaro Etebo converted a penalty for a two-goal half-time lead and Peter Onyekachi completed the Libreville rout.

Axel Meye netted midway through the second half for Gabon in a competition restricted to under-23 players.

A profitable weekend for away teams saw Sudan win 2-1 in Ethiopia, Burundi win 1-0 in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda draw 0-0 in Mozambique.

Ali Osman and Athar Al-Tahir gave Sudan a two-goal half-time lead in eastern city Dire Dawa and Dawa Hutessa converted a late Ethiopian penalty.

DR Congo dominated Burundi in Kinshasa only to fall behind on 50 minutes when Badi Shimirimana punished a defensive blunder.

Mbala Glody wasted a late chance to equalise in the Congolese capital when his penalty kick was saved.

Mozambique and Uganda created plenty of scoring opportunities in Maputo, but neither side possessed a clinical finisher.

Egypt are scheduled to host Kenya on March 1 in the final first-leg fixture.

Congo host the quadrennial multi-sport All-Africa Games between September 4 and 19 in Brazzaville.
