Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of Champions League football next season crashed on Saturday with a 3-0 loss at Stoke ending their bid for a top-four finish.

First-half goals from Charlie Adam and Steven Nzonzi and a late Mame Biram Diouf effort gave Stoke all three points following a dominant afternoon at the Britannia Stadium.

The defeat leaves Spurs seven points off fourth with just two fixtures left, ending their Champions League hopes.

Tottenham nevertheless maintain their one-point advantage over Southampton, who fell 2-0 at Leicester, in their tussle to clinch the last definite Europa League qualification spot.

Danny Rose started on the bench for Tottenham with Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches coming in for his eighth league start of the season and Jan Vertonghen moving to left-back.

Jack Butland kept his place in goal for Stoke, with Marc Muniesa and Geoff Cameron in for Marc Wilson and Phil Bardsley.

And Spaniard Muniesa missed Stoke's first attempt after five minutes while a Marko Arnautovic volley after 18 minutes was also cleared by Hugo Lloris in the Spurs' goal.

Midfielder Adam finally headed Stoke ahead after a blunder by Vertonghen after 21 minutes with Nzonzi doubling their advantage after 32 minutes.

Spurs, who had Chiriches sent off five minutes after the break following a second yellow card, came closest when Stoke defender Marc Muniesa headed against his own bar.

Diouf added the third following Arnautovic's cross after 86 minutes to give Stoke their first double success against Tottenham after 2-1 win at White Hart Lane in November.

Stoke are out of the running for Europe as they sit ninth with 50 points.
