Costa Rica opens probe of arrested official

Costa Rican prosecutors opened a probe Wednesday into corruption allegations against the president of the national football federation, Eduardo Li, arrested in an international raid on top FIFA officials.

The local probe will examine allegations raised in a US investigation that led to Li's arrest in Zurich with six other top football officials, the attorney general's office said in a statement.

"The crimes were committed outside Costa Rica, so they are under the jurisdiction of the United States. We are determining whether assets from the crime are here in the country, and that led to an investigation for money laundering," assistant prosecutor Celso Gamboa told local media.

Costa Rica has not received a request for help from the US Justice Department, he said.

Li was two days shy of taking up a seat on the executive committee of FIFA, world football's governing body.

He is also on the executive committee of CONCACAF, the football governing body for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as heading Costa Rican federation FEDEFUT.

He was among the seven people arrested in a dawn raid at a luxury hotel in Zurich, now facing deportation to the United States on charges of accepting more than $150 million in bribes.
