Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola will spend next season on loan at Spanish side Villarreal, the two clubs announced on Thursday.

Areola, who was part of the France side that won the under-20 World Cup in 2013, spent the season just finished on loan at Ligue 1 side Bastia.

Villarreal's first-choice goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo underwent surgery in May on a cruciate knee ligament injury that will keep him out for several months.
