West Ham complete signing of France's Payet

West Ham United have completed the signing of France international playmaker Dimitri Payet from Marseille on a five-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

The East London outfit said they had paid "an undisclosed eight-figure fee" for Payet, but reports in France have said that Marseille accepted an offer of 15 million euros (£10.6m, $16.8m).

Payet's contract comes with the option of a further, sixth year.

The 28-year-old from the Indian Ocean island of Reunion won his 15th cap for France in a friendly in Albania earlier this month.

Formerly with Nantes, Saint-Etienne and Lille, he scored seven goals for Marseille last season and was the leading assist-provider in Ligue 1 with 16.

Payet becomes West Ham's third close-season signing following the captures of Spanish midfielder Pedro Obiang from Sampdoria and Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph from Birmingham City.

The Hammers have also appointed a new manager in the shape of Croatian Slaven Bilic, who replaces Sam Allardyce.
