The Rose Bowl, site of the 1994 World Cup final, was among 10 United States venues named Thursday to host matches in next year's Copa America Centenario tournament.

In addition to the stadium that seats 92,542 in suburban Los Angeles, venues in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Orlando, Phoenix and Seattle were chosen to host matches in the June 3-26 event by the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).

The historic 100th anniversary event marks the first time the Copa America has been staged outside South America, with its 10 nations joining six from North America in an intercontinental showdown.

Eight of the venues will be home stadiums from National Football League teams with the Rose Bowl and Orlando's Citrus Bowl the sites of major collegiate American football clashes every year.

Most venues will play host to at least three matches.

The hosts were selected from 24 original candidates that submitted bids, those hopefuls staying with the project even though the FIFA corruption scandal had raised doubts the tournament would be staged. Stadiums needed 60,000 seats for consideration.

"The 10 host cities of Copa America Centenario 2016 will provide the perfect stage to unite the American continents in a unique celebration of the football history and talent in the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL regions," said Alfredo Hawit, President of CONCACAF.

"We are certain that the host country and the US Soccer Federation, in their roles, will not only display the growing passion for the sport, but also contribute to expanding the legacy and magnitude of this tournament by providing a memorable experience."

The tournament will provide a once-in-a-lifetime stage for South American stars, but it comes after a busy European club campaign and during a span when the European Championship and Rio de Janeiro Olympics will offer their own football showcases.

"It's truly a source of pride to be able to bring to the United States this unparalleled event," CONMEBOL President Juan Angel Napout said.

"Without a doubt, this event will provide the luxury of stars on display whose talents shine in the most competitive leagues in the world."

South American sides Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will be joined by the US hosts, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica.

The remaining two places will go to the winners of matches on January 8 between Cuba and Panama and Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago.
