Wilson fires Brighton into Championship top two
James Wilson's first half goal was enough to give Brighton a 1-0 victory over Reading that moves them into the second automatic promotion spot in the Championship, while Hull were held 1-1 by Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
On-loan Manchester United striker Wilson put Chris Hughton's Brighton into the lead in the 25th minute with his fourth goal for the club, slotting in low after being picked out by Sam Baldock.
The Seagulls held on in the second half at the Amex Stadium, although Ola John missed a good chance to equalise for the visitors.
Brighton have now gone five league matches without conceding a goal and are a point above third-placed Middlesbrough, who do have a game in hand.
Hull have slipped back to fourth after they failed to win for the fourth consecutive game, although substitute Sone Aluko did at least rescue a point against Forest at the KC Stadium.
The managerless away side, who sacked Dougie Freedman on Sunday, broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark through a stunning 30-yard strike from Gary Gardner.
But Aluko popped up to take advantage of Tom Huddlestone's effort deflecting into his path for Steve Bruce's Tigers, who had earlier seen Abel Hernandez hit the post.
The other game on Tuesday night saw Ipswich move to within a point of the play-off places with a 2-0 victory over Blackburn, Daryl Murphy grabbing a brace at Portman Road.
