Togo's Le Roy eyes resumption of domestic leagues

Togo coach Claude Le Roy is hoping competitive matches can resume soon, with domestic leagues suspended for more than a year because of a dispute at the country's football federation.

"The championship must start again as soon as possible," the 68-year-old told reporters on Wednesday after a friendly tournament in the capital, Lome, to mark Togo's independence day.

"There's nothing more coherent and structured than a national championship," added the Frenchman, who took over from Belgium's Tom Saintfiet last month.

Internal wrangling at the Togo football federation (FTF) has caused top flight football to be suspended since late 2014 and prompted the intervention of world governing body FIFA.

But a new executive team was elected in February and is working towards the resumption of matches.

Since the suspension, teams have been forced to arrange their own friendly fixtures at small stadiums.

Wednesday's tournament at the municipal stadium in the capital, Lome, saw Koroki beat AS Togo Port 5-3 on penalties after both sides scored in normal time.

Twenty-nine clubs from the first and second divisions took part in all.

Togo's sports minister, Guy Lorenzo, promised the domestic championship would resume soon, with concern about the suspension's effect on the national side, the Sparrow Hawks.

Togo currently stand 103rd in the FIFA world rankings and failed to qualify for next year's Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

But Lorenzo told AFP: "I notice our players haven't lost their edge despite the fact they haven't been on the pitch for some months."
