Stones set to miss England qualifiers

John Stones was set to be ruled out of England's upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers with San Marino and Estonia after suffering an ankle injury during Everton's 2-1 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

The centre-back sustained the damage to his left ankle ligament late on during the match at Old Trafford and will be out for a "few weeks" according to Everton manager Roberto Martinez, a lay-off which would rule Stones out of both Thursday's home match with San Marino and the game away to Estonia a week on Sunday.

Stones, 20, left Old Trafford on crutches with a protective boot on his left leg.

"John Stones has a problem with his ankle. It will be at least a few weeks (until he recovers)," Martinez told a post-match news conference.

"I don't expect John to be fit for next week. It is such a massive blow because he plays with an incredible arrogance. We will assess him in the next 48 hours."

Stones's expected absence saw him add to the list of defenders unavailable to England manager Roy Hodgson, with Kyle Walker, Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones already ruled out of both the San Marino and Estonia fixtures.

United too had an injury scare when full-back Luke Shaw went off with a knee injury in the second half, although the teenager is still expected to join up with the England Under-21 squad.

"It's not a bad injury," said Shaw.

"I felt it in the first 20 minutes when I got caught, but it carried on during the game so I thought it was probably best to come off before it gets any worse," the 19-year-old left-back added.

"I spoke with the doctor and obviously the manager as well, and both feel it's best that I do go (with the Under-21s) as it's not an injury that is going to keep me out.

"Hopefully, I should be training in the next couple of days and can get another two games of 90 minutes."

Shaw has been involved in the England senior squad since March but Hodgson has allowed him to be drafted in by the Under-21s for their two-legged European Championship play-off against Croatia.
