Goal-line technology to make early bow in Germany

Goal-line technology could make its appearance in the Bundesliga as early as the end of the season relegation play-offs, the head of the German Football League (DFL) said on Thursday.

Christian Seifert said the matches between the teams finishing 16th in the Bundesliga and third in the second division could act as a testing ground for the wider introduction of video cameras.

"If it is in the interest of the clubs and the suppliers can guarantee a quick and effective installation of the equipment, there is nothing to stop it," Seifert told Sky Sport Germany.

But he warned that he would oppose such a move if the DFL considered that the equipment "was not guaranteed 100 percent" reliable.

He was speaking after several clubs had come out in favour of the introduction for the new technology for the play-offs rather than making its much-heralded arrival for the Super Cup on August 1.

The DFL have opted for installing the "Hawk Eye" system which has been in use on the international tennis circuit for several years and has already been successfully introduced in the English Premier League, rather than the GoalControl system used by FIFA for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The cost is estimated at between 150,000 and 180,000 euros per season per club.

The two relegation play-offs will be played on May 28 and June 1, two days before the German Cup final.
