German FA hit Eintracht hard for crowd trouble

The German FA (DFB) on Thursday fined Eintracht Frankfurt and partially banned the club's supporters for three games following crowd trouble during both a German Cup and Bundesliga match.

The DFB's disciplinary committee has docked Frankfurt 75,000 euros ($80,978) and ordered their fans be excluded from part of the stadium for their home league game against VfB Stuttgart on February 6 and away match at Darmstadt at the end of April.

For the away match, Frankfurt must reimburse neighbours Darmstadt for the loss of revenue from ticket sales.

Eintracht must also spend 25,000 euros on improving safety and anti-violence measures, as well as improving the club's infrastructure, which is part of the 75,000-euro fine.

The DFB has also said that should there be any further crowd trouble, Frankfurt fans will be banned from a third game as part of a suspended decision until December 2016.

The German FA has taken exception to the behaviour of Eintracht fans following their 1-0 home league defeat to neighbours Darmstadt, which was marred by crowd trouble on December 6, when only police intervention prevented rival fans from clashing.

The game had to be stopped for nearly three minutes when pyrotechnics were set off in a block containing Frankfurt fans and flags in Darmstadt's colours were burned, while firecrackers were thrown onto the pitch.

That came after Frankfurt's 1-0 German Cup defeat at third-division Erzgebirge Aue last October was marred by pyrotechnics fired from the away fans' section.
