Cazorla and Koke hail the legacy of unique Xavi

Spain midfielders Koke and Santi Cazorla have lauded the impact made by Xavi Hernandez for both Spain and Barcelona over the past decade amidst rumours the 34-year-old is about to leave the Catalan club and retire from international football.

After 133 caps, Xavi may have played his last match for Spain in their 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands last week as he could only watch on from the bench as holders La Roja were eliminated from the competition after just two games with a 2-0 defeat to Chile.

"There will not be another footballer like Xavi in history and a huge part of the success of the national team is thanks to him," said Cazorla.

"He is a spectacular player. He is still a part of the national team. We have enjoyed a lot of time with him and I hope we continue to do so."

Atletico Madrid's Koke has been tipped as one of the key successors to Spain's golden generation, but the 22-year-old warned it will be difficult to match the achievements of Xavi, who has spearheaded a side that had won three consecutive major tournaments before their failure in Brazil.

"It is difficult because there will only be one Xavi. It will be difficult to match him for everything that he has achieved and for what he still is."

It also remains to be seen whether coach Vicente del Bosque will continue in his role despite having signed a contract to continue on until the European Championships in 2016.

Cazorla dismissed suggestions that a lack of hunger had been to blame for his side's failings in Brazil and claimed that the progression of the likes of Koke means Spain will still be a force to be reckoned with in coming tournaments.

"We were beaten by two very good sides in Chile and the Netherlands and that can happen in football, but I don't think there was a lack of hunger or ambition to win," said the Arsenal midfielder.

"We need to finish the tournament in the best way possible and look ahead to a bright future.

"Vicente has been with us a long time and thanks to him we have achieved this success, so we need to wait for his decision.

"There may be players that don't continue, but there are others that are coming to take their place. Spain's future is very exciting and we will see what happens."
