Beckenbauer urges talks between FIFA, UEFA

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, a former FIFA executive committee member, has called for dialogue as a matter of urgency between feuding world and European governing bodies FIFA and UEFA

"I think that they (FIFA and UEFA) are currently poles apart. The only thing that can help is to communicate," Beckenbauer told Germany sports agency SID, an AFP subsidiary.

"They need to talk fast. Because what is happening is detrimental not only to the federations but also for football."

Sepp Blatter's reelection for a fifth term as FIFA president on Friday was mired in controversy which shook football's supreme body.

UEFA president Michel Platini had on Thursday urged Blatter to resign, which the 79-year-old Swiss official refused to do.

Platini said change was crucial after seven senior FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday on charges of corruption.

But Beckenbauer does not expect a quick solution to the conflict.

"UEFA expressed their views very strongly during the campaign. It will be interesting to see their reaction," he said, referring to the meeting of UEFA on Saturday in Berlin on the sidelines of the Champions League final between Juventus and Barcelona.

After his reelection Blatter hit out at UEFA and Platini.

"It is a hate that comes not just from one person at UEFA, it comes from the UEFA organisation that cannot understand that in 1998 I became president," he said.

Asked whether he would forgive France's Platini, Blatter said "I forgive everyone but I do not forget."

Blatter's reelection marked a dramatic end to a bitter campaign dominated by corruption allegations.

Regarding future relations with UEFA, the Swiss said: "We have to continue with Platini and UEFA. We cannot live without UEFA and UEFA cannot live without us."
