Fulltime Summary:
What a tragic ending! After Argentina failed to play out their dominance by scoring for over 118 minutes, it sure looked like Switzerland would get into the penalties with their strong defensive work. The Nati stayed focussed and calm all the time and showed a lot of effort, which wasn't rewarded at the end. Argentina was in fact superior, if you just take a look at the stats: 62:38% possession and 29:14 shots (22:7 on target) do speak for themselves. But la Albiceleste didn't make anything out of it for a long time. The Swiss on the other hand fought well until the very end and had a few great chances, too. Because of all the effort they put into batlle, Ottmar Hitzfeld's team maybe even would've deserved to go into the penalty shootout. But of course, there was also Lichtsteiner's turnover before the late winner was scored by Di María, so the Argentinians' victory isn't unearned at all. Still, as a neutral spectator one would've also granted the Europeans a win, especially with Hitzfeld retiring after this world cup. Besides, Sabella's squad didn't play very convincing, providing less confidence in Argentina's ability to beat even stronger teams. All in all, it was a very thrilling match with the South Americans avoiding the Lottery.

Full-Time
120'
Ezequiel Garay (Argentina) is shown a yellow card
Switzerland have their last chance with a free kick! Garay hits Shaqiri with a bad sliding tackle and is booked. But this gives the Europeans a good opportunity from about 18 metres distance. But it's blocked and the referee blows the whistle!
120'
What is happening here?! Switzerland have a corner from the right and even Benaglio is standing in the opposition's half. Rodríguezes from the right cross finds Dzemaili at the left post! His header hits the bar, bounces back and then bounces off his knee and off the target.
120'
Ángel Di María (Argentina) is shown a yellow card
Di María is booked for a challenge against Rodríguez, but this probably won't bother the Real Madrid winger at all.
118'
Goooal for Argentina, 1:0 by Ángel Di María
Unbelievable! Just when it looked like Switzerland would force Argentina to go into penalties, the South Americans score the lead! After Lichtsteiner loses the ball to Messi in central midfield, the Barcelona striker runs forward and is unstoppable on his way to the box. Eventually he plays a lateral pass onto the right channel, where Di María scores from about ten metres distance with a low shot onto the left corner of the goal!
115'
Switzerland manage to gain possession and take the ball into Argentina's half. But the can't use this opportunity to create a chance. Instead, Rodríguezes cross is easily catched by Romero.
113'
Medmedi, who showed several good defending efforts, is now replaced by Dzemaili. Maybe the Napioli midfielder is substituted for the penalty shootout?
113'
Substitution (in) Switzerland -> Blerim Dzemaili
113'
Substitution (out) Switzerland -> Admir Mehmedi
111'
Seriously, Argentina, that's the best you've got? Of course Switzerland's defense is not to be underestimated, but one would expect more from a favourite like la Albiceleste.
109'
That's Di María's first good effort ins this game! He takes a shot at the right channel from about 18 metres, but Benaglio manages to parry it over the bar before the ball goes into the top right corner.
108'
Again, Messia and his teammates control the ball inside their opposition's half, but the Swiss penalty area seems to be a forbidden zone for the Argentinians.
106'
Sabella replaces Gago with Biglia, taking his third substitution. Hitzfeld still has one player change left.
106'
Substitution (in) Argentina -> Lucas Biglia
106'
Substitution (out) Argentina -> Fernando Gago
106'
Second Half of extra time begins
105'
Halftime Summary:
Basically the first half of extra time was a continuation of the previous events, with Argentina trying to score but steadily failing to get inside of the penalty area. It looked like la Albiceleste's energy is almost depleted, which is why the Swiss managed to play more offensively in the last five minutes.
105'
First Half of extra time ends
105'
Rojo is obviously exhausted to the fullest and now replaced by Basanta.
105'
Substitution (in) Argentina -> José Basanta
105'
Substitution (out) Argentina -> Marcos Rojo
105'
Now the Swiss can actually maintain possession in the Argentinian half and almost get into the box. Again, Hitzfeld's players show great passing skills and because of that, Rojo can't be substituted for over two minutes.
103'
That's really impressive! Despite of defending all the time, which must be quite exhausting, the Nati still have the concentration and energy to get out of their own half with some crisp passing.
101'
Although Argentina have much potential in their team, they fail to get on the pitch when it matters. This way they always have to rely on Messi's talent as in their previous matches at group stage.
100'
More and more the Swiss are able to free themselves from the opposition's pressure, but Shaqiri's pass into the box to Seferović is intercepted.
98'
Will we see this match go into penalties? So far it sure looks that way, but of course one little mistake or a spark of genius by players like Messi or Shaqiri could change everything.
95'
It's a constant battle between the two teams! Whether it's the Swiss or the Argentinians trying to attack, they are stopped by their opponents with big physical presence at the sideline.
93'
This could've been a dangerous attempt! Fernandes sends in a wide cross from the right, but Seferović misses the opportunity to score with a header.
91'
Extra time starts without any substitutions, with Argentina having two and Switzerland having one sub left.
91'
Kick-Off extra time

Second Half Summary:
What a great fight this was so far! Argentina stayed dominant and managed to create more chances, having 63:37% possession and 20:9 attempts (15:5 on target). But la Albiceleste couldn't enforce the 1-0, despite the ball almost always circulating around Switzerland's penalty area. The Swiss did in fact defend very well and had a few attempts to release the pressure at least for a short period.
90'
Second Half ends
90'
Switzerland have an effort after a long period of defending! Inler swings in a free kick from the left, but Schär's header goes over the bar.
90'
Ouch! Gago stepts on Mehmedi's foot and then looks at Eriksson like a little boy who knows what he has done wrong. Lucky for him, this isn't penalised with a yellow card.
90'
Marcos Rojo (Argentina) is shown a yellow card
Rojo is cautioned by Eriksson for a rough sliding tackle against Schär, the defender is the first Argentinian to be booked in this match.
89'
If Argentina get into the box, they only manage to do so with Messi having the ball. This time he passes it onto Palacio, but the forward loses the ball immediately.
87'
Behrami commits a foul against Messi and subconsequently is pushed away by the Barcelona striker. But Jonas Eriksson calms both players down and decides not to book either of them.
85'
After Di María's attempt is blocked by Behrami, Argentina have a corner from the left. But again, is comes to nothing, la Albiceleste just can't create more dangerous chances and enforce the leading goal. In the group stage it was Messi who rescued them in such situations, but so far he's not able to do so again.
82'
Drmić could've scored the lead and be Switzerland's hero, but instead he now goes off and is replaced by Seferović.
82'
Substitution (in) Switzerland -> Haris Seferović
82'
Substitution (out) Switzerland -> Josip Drmić
79'
After the players are calmed down, it's busniess as usual again: Argentinia try to get into the box, but the Swiss defense is just too tight!
77'
Wow, what happended? Both sides claim to be fouled after a dangerous sequence in Switzerland's penalty area. Messi fires a low shot from about 14 metres distance and Benaglio can't catch it. He immediately throws himself onto the ball, but fails to control it with his hand while Palacio stumbles over the keeper. So clearly this was neither a foul by the goalie nor by the striker.
74'
Sabella makes his first substitution, replacing Lavezzi with Palacio. Maybe the 32-year-old can break through the Swiss defense?
74'
Substitution (in) Argentina -> Rodrigo Palacio
74'
Substitution (out) Argentina -> Ezequiel Lavezzi
73'
Gelson Fernandes (Switzerland) is shown a yellow card
Fernandes is booked only six minutes after his substitution, rushing into Messi with a careless challenge. Therefore the 27-year-old is booked by the referee.
70'
Who will emerge victorious today? So far it could go either way, since the Swiss are defending well against harmlessly attacking Argentinians.
67'
That's Messi's first attempt in this game! After Higuaín fails to win a header, the rebound comes to Argentina's captain. The Barcelona striker immediately tries a volley from about 18 metres distance, but it goes just over the bar.
66'
Xhaka seems to be a little bit tired and is replaced by Freiburg midfielder Fernandes.
66'
Substitution (in) Switzerland -> Gelson Fernandes
66'
Substitution (out) Switzerland -> Granit Xhaka
65'
Sabella's team have their next corner from the left, but they just don't manage to use those. Argentina clearly are dominant without breaking through the opposition's defense.
62'
Well, now they have their chance! The South Americans have a free kick from the left and Messi's cross finds Higuaín. The Real Madrid striker's almost converts with a great header, but it's pushed over the bar by Benaglio. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.
61'
Argentinia may be dominant in this period of the game, but their attacks aren't frightening at all. At best, they manage to pressure Switzerland into their box, but fail to create dangerous chances.
60'
The corner comes to nothing again, but la Albiceleste keep possession. Eventually Di María can pass Rodríguez at the right edge of the box, but his following rabona cross goes out of play.
59'
This time Rojo's cross is more dangerous! He sends it right onto the near corner of the goal and almiost surprises Benaglio. But the goalie is able to clear for a corner.
57'
Rojo is sent onto the left wing and centres the ball immediately. But Wolfsburg keeper Benaglio leaves his goal and makes a clearance with a flying punch.
55'
Di María's showing a poor performance today, making the wrong decisions on and on. He could pass the ball onto the right wing, where Lavezzi has much space. But instead the Real Madrid winger shoots from about 19 metres distance, but it's blocked again.
53'
La Albiceleste maintain possession without gaining more space. They pass the ball back and forth and finally shoot out of desperation. But Di María's attempts from the edge of the box are blocked.
51'
Switzerland counterattack again and Mehmedi dashes into the left channel of the box. Then he passes back to Drmić, but the striker's attempt goes high over the target.
50'
That's a dangerous free kick! Shaqiri shoots directly in the right channel, but his attempt from about 290 metres distance is parried away by Romero before it reaches the top right corner of the goal.
48'
Argentina have a free kick from the left hand side after Xhaka commits a foul. Messi sends in a nice cross, but it's punched away by Benaglio.
46'
Play resumes without any player changes.
46'
Second Half begins
45'
Halftime Summary:
So far this has been an entertaining match, since both teams had a big physical presence right from the beginning and repeatedly tried to create danger in front of the opposition's goal. While the Albiceleste had 60:40% possession, the shot stats are pretty balanced: Argentina had 5:4 attempts from which 4:3 went on target. Still, the South Americans failed to use their dominance on the pitch to pressure the Swiss into their box. Instead, the Nati was able to have some efforts, with Drmić throwing away the most promising one. The future Leverkusen striker actually could've scored the lead just six minutes before the half-time break, but failed to stay concentrated. But Sabella's team also lacked some organization in midfield to provice the ball for the strikers, forcing Messi to act as a playmaker and almost be omnipresent. Still, this was a promising first half which creates a drive for more.
45'
Half-Time
44'
An interesting first half is nearing its end, with neither of the side being able to control the game, but constantly trying to create danger.
41'
That's a great effort by Messi! He dashes through central midfield and regains possession every time one of his teammates loses the ball. Finally he finds Di María at the right edge of the box, but the winger's flicked shot is to weak to pose a threat to Benaglio's goal.
39'
What is he doing?! Switzerland counterattack and the ball is passed onto the left corner of the box. Drmić has much space and could take his time, instead he decides to chip the ball with a onetimer. But his poor attempt is easily catched by Romero.
36'
Granit Xhaka (Switzerland) is shown a yellow card
It's not a bad foul at all, but because of the cumulation of fouls it's alright to show Xhaka a yellow card. The Mönchengladbach midfielder extends his rear and brings about Lavezzi's downfall.
35'
The following free kick from the left wing swings in beautifully, but is punched away by Romero.
34'
The crowd falls in love with Shaqiri instantly! The left-footed player maintains the ball in his possession at the right hand side, though being challenged by several Argentinians. The 22-year-old shows some great technique and is finally fouled by Lavezzi.
32'
So far this is an entertaining game for the supporters with both teams looking to attack on and on! Di María cuts inside from the right and almost has a chance, but his shot from about 14 metres distance is blocked by Rodríguez.
30'
Garay almost scores the lead! But the centre back just misses Di María's fine inswinging corner from the right by few centimetres. This way the ball rushes past the left post.
28'
This time the Swiss can create danger! Making a short corner enables Shaqiri to dribble again and break through the right edge of the box. The Bayern Munich midfielder passes the ball into the back area, but Xhaka's onetimer is blocked by Romero!
27'
Following a short free kick from the right hand side, Shaqiri tries to dribble down the wing, but Gago manages to clear for a corner. But it is cleared again for another set piece.
24'
The Swiss put some slick passing on display! At their left defending side, Mehmedi plays the one-two with Behrami, who passes it back to Rodríguez. The Wolfsburg left back eventually finds Drmić with a precise long ball forward.
22'
More and more the game becomes heated, with players from both teams discussing with the Jonas Eriksson. It seems like both sides are aware of the importance of this match and don't want to show any weakness.
20'
Again we see a rough challenge, this time it's Di María attacking Behrami in midfield. The winger's foul is penalised with a free kick in central midfield.
18'
So far neither of the teams are able to create chances, but at least all of the players embrace the battle! Rodríguez stays calm on his left defending side and manages to flick the ball over Lavezzi's head before passing it on to a teammate.
16'
Argentina don't hesitate to attack, but quickly try to get into the penalty area. But again Benaglio has no difficulties in catching Zabaleta's cross from the right edge ob the box.
13'
This could've got dangerous! Di María sends in a waist-high cross for Messi from the left, but it's not precise enough and therefore an easy catch for the goalkeeper.
11'
The Europeans seek to gain some possession, but are immediately attacked by their opponents. Argentina have a big physical presence.
8'
Switzerland have a corner kick, after Mehmedi's cross from the left is cleared out of play. Shaqiri swings it in and finds Inler, but play is interrupted due to an offensive foul commited by Drmić.
7'
Showing their rivalry with Argentina, the Brazilian crowd show their support for the Switzerland, cheering after every successful move of the Nati's players.
5'
Unsurprisingly, the Argentinians take over control right from the beginning. Di María tries to pass Lichtsteiner on the left wing, but the Juventus defender holds the Real Madrid winger's jersey and causes a free kick for the Albiceleste. But eventually it comes to nothing.
3'
That's a bad challenge by Shaqiri! The left-footed player hits Lavezzi's foot with a sliding tackle, but isn't cautioned by the referee.
1'
Let the game begin!

Kick-Off
Switzerland have a score to settle with the Albiceleste, since both nations faced each other six times and the Argentinians managed to stay unbeaten against the Nati. While they only met once at a world cup in 1966 (Argentina won 2-0), both teams played five friendlies against each other. But the South Americans won 5-0 in 1980, 2-0 in 1984 and 3-1 in 2012. Besides these two nations drawed 1-1 in 1990 and 2007.
Furthermore, Argentina's head coach added: "Players like Lavezzi always say very positive things, they keep everybody happy and they keep a good atmosphere in the group. He hasn't been in the starting line-up but he never made faces or comments. He's always supporting the team." As if Sabella wanted to prove his point, he put Lavezzi into the starting eleven for today's match, since Agüero - for whom he was substituted against Nigeria - suffered a hamstring injury against the Super Eagles. Still, the Manchester City striker will sit on the bench today.
During the game against Nigeria, Ezequiel Lavezzi had splashed Alejandro Sabella with water during a short break in play when the Argentinian head coach tried to give the Paris St. Germain striker instructions. But Sabella didn't resent the 29-year-old's action, but actually staded he "understood his gesture as a positive gesture."
Asked about Argentina's superstar, the Wolfsburg goalie didn't want to focus solely on Messi: "We'll prepare ourselves to face Messi, as well as their other players, but of course he has the quality to decide games. It will be relatively hard to shut him out, but he's not the only dangerous player in a very good team. Argentina don't revolve just around Messi even though he's their superstar. But we know all about the skills he has and it helps that we've seen a lot of him."
Swiss skipper and goalkeeper Diego Benaglio was already a part of the team in the last two encounters and seems to be looking for revenge: "Both times we have played them recently, we weren't without chances and we have to believe in our chances this time. To pull off a sensational result, we need an exceptional day from every individual in the team. Of course, we want to write history."
FC Basel defender Fabian Schär, who will replace von Bergen as right back, sounded quite confident when asked about his team's chances of beating Argentina: "We’ve shown a few times that we can compete with, and beat, big teams." He also talked about his team's star, Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, who had scored all three goals against Honduras: "We’re very happy to have him and I’d be delighted if he continued scoring."
While Alejandro Sabella has the whole Argentinian roster at his disposal, his counterpart Ottmar Hitzfeld has to do without Mario Gavranović and Steve von Bergen. The former left the tournament already on Saturday after he had torn his cruciate knee ligament in a training session. His injury is even so bad, that he probably won't come back until next year. Von Bergen also had to head back to Swiss for treatment, since France's Olivier Giroud caused him an eye injury by kicking him in the face.
The Swiss are the runner-up of group E, since they beat Ecuador 2-1, but lost 2-5 against France in the second game. The Nati finally made sure to proceed to the next round by winning 3-0 against Honduras.
Argentina came first in their group, winning all of their three games in group F. La Albiceleste first beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1, but had some difficulties to control the game. Against Iran it was basically the same, but Lionel Messi scored the late winner in injury time. Facing Nigeria in their final game of the group stage, it was again Messi who scored the 1-0 and 2-1, making his team win 3-2 in the end.
Azad Derakhshani will be your commentator for this match.
Welcome to the last matchday of the round of 16 and today's game between Argentina and Switzerland!
