Fulltime Summary:
It's a final! With an improbable comeback the Elftal secures its spot in the quarter finals! After a underwhelming and anxious showing they had to deliver after going down and substitute Huntelaar proved to be the difference maker with an assist and the decisive penalty goal! Mexico has to cope with the fact that they were so close to advancing to the next round for the first time since 1986 and yet came up short. They got beaten by the individual class of Huntelaar, Robben and Sneijder today and can surely exit the tournaments with their heads held high.

Can Mexico come back from this? They try some final long balls, but Herrera's teams seems unable to switch gears.

He received a card for complaining.
90'
Goooal for Netherlands, 2:1 by Klaas Jan Huntelaar
The substitute that only played a remote role so far might have just won it for the Elftal! He keeps his cool and buries the ball in the bottom left corner.
90'
Rafael Márquez (Mexico) is shown a yellow card
What a turn of events as Robben produces another great run into the danger area and is brought down by the captain. Penalty to Holland!
90'
It's six minutes of stoppage time and Holland is pushing for that second goal.
89'
But what a shock for a Mexican team that was minutes away from the quarter finals. How will Herrera's team react now and in an eventual overtime?
88'
Goooal for Netherlands, 1:1 by Wesley Sneijder
Ochoa is beaten! Huntelaar heads the ball back from the far post to the edge of the box after a Robben corner and Sneijder simply hammers a half-volley into the bottom-left corner. We are level!
86'
Javier Hernández is leading a counterattack for Mexico and has numbers for a second, but misses to bring his teammates into play on the left and is eventually cut off by the defense.
85'
Huntelaar receives a ball over the top and Ochoa once again superbly blocks the close-ranged effort. The assistant had his flag up anyway.
85'
Kuyt wins a corner and the delivery by Robben is headed away.
84'
The ball swings form left to right, but the Elftal is unable to get into the danger area.
82'
The Netherlands is trying to build up calmly but they are running out of time against Mexico that has all men behind the ball.
81'
Miguel Herrera is known to be a passionate man and is warned by the referee to stay inside his coaching zone.
79'
Carlos Salcido bullies through two defenders at the edge of the box before releasing a ferocious shot that is well high.
78'
We're underway again.
76'
Before the next drinking break, we have the final substitution for either side. Demoted Mexican star Chicharito continues his unloved role as substitute and Klaas Jan Huntelaar gets a rare chance in the Elftal as well.
76'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Klaas Jan Huntelaar
76'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Robin van Persie
75'
Substitution (in) Mexico -> Javier Hernández
75'
Substitution (out) Mexico -> Oribe Peralta
74'
Robben accelerates! Robben just powers through the right side into the penalty area, evades Rafael Márquez's tackle, but can't squeeze it past Ochoa from a tight angle. The keeper already secured the point against a superior Brazil, will he be the hero again today?
73'
Louis van Gaal can make one final change to support his team. There are some offensive options left on the bench, like striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
71'
Héctor Herrera finds a gap on the left side and fires a bullet across the six yard box, but no teammate is present to poke it home.
70'
Mexico is chasing every ball in midfield and fights to secure the result.
69'
Paul Aguilar (Mexico) is shown a yellow card
He is booked for a late challenge.
68'
Robben is brought down inside the penalty area but other than the situation at the end of the first half, Proença rightfully waves it off this time.
67'
At least the Elftal has found their rhythm on offense and is working the flanks consistently.
66'
Will the next big European outlet be eliminated today? Spain, Portugal, Italy, England and the lists just keeps growing. It was expected that under the local conditions the American teams could have an advantage, but this is a surprise nonetheless.
64'
Robben cuts into the middle again and this time delivers a cross in search of van Persie. The United man can't quite reach it and is flies wide of the far post.
62'
Miguel Herrera takes out the goalscorer and brings fresh legs for the offense. Another sign that the coach does not want to park a bus in front of his goal.
61'
Substitution (in) Mexico -> Javier Aquino
61'
Substitution (out) Mexico -> Giovani Dos Santos
60'
Sneijder misses just wide! The pressure is rising from the Elftal as Robben finds space down the right side and characteristically cuts into the middle before laying it off to the Galatasaray man. His effort towards the left corner of the goal is deflected and goes out for a corner.
60'
Mexico shouldn't make the mistake to entirely rely on their defense. Holland has plenty of firepower although they have not shown it today.
58'
What a save by Ochoa! A corner slips through to de Vrij at the edge of the six yard box, the centre back directs it towards goal, but the keeper somehow gets his hand on the ball and deflects it on to the post.
57'
Paul Verhaegh couldn't convince as full back. Bruno Martins Indi will now move into the back four now and Depay strengthen the offense.
56'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Memphis Depay
56'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Paul Verhaegh
55'
Oribe Peralta bullies through the middle and shakes off his opponent before releasing a shot from 20 yards. Jasper Cillessen has no problems catching the ball though.
55'
Two corners can't threaten the Mexican defense and eventually the ball goes out for a goal kick.
53'
Wesley Sneijder takes the shot from 27 yards, but fires it into the wall.
52'
Holland starts off with winning a free-kick in center field.
50'
That might just have been what this match needed to get going! It's surely deserved for Mexico and now the struggling Elftal has no choice but to find their offense.
48'
Goooal for Mexico, 0:1 by Giovani Dos Santos
The Villarreal controls the ball with his chest at the edge of the box and fires a bullet under pressure into the low right corner of the goal. What an individual effort by Dos Santos!
47'
The spectators are quickly back at booing the scene. The teams continue poking the ball around in midfield.
47'
Can we expect a bit more action in the second half? The stakes are rising and with it the caution as well.
46'
The centre back indeed is unable to continue and is replaced by Porto's Diego Reyes.
46'
Substitution (in) Mexico -> Diego Reyes
46'
Substitution (out) Mexico -> Héctor Moreno

Second Half begins

Halftime Summary:
A rather uninspired Elftal couldn't transfer their stellar play from group phase into today's encounter. They were sitting deep into their own half, only focused on their defensive stability and not willing to take any risk. Mexico was the more determined and courageous side throughout and had chances for a lead, but almost gave away their solid showing on a capital error by Maza late. Stay tuned!
45'
Half-Time
45'
That might even have been a penalty for the Netherlands! Replay shows that sandwiched Robben should have been awarded the spot-kick, but it was hard to see in real-time. Meanwhile Mexico goes into the half with a concern as Moreno has injured himself during the last sequence. He might not be coming back.
45'
Robben can nearly capitalize! Mexico has little problems with what the Elftal has to offer, but a capital bad pass by Maza in El Tri's half brings Robin van Persie into play. The United player has support in Robben, but the Bayern man is tackled inside the box and can't get a shot off.
45'
It's four minutes of stoppage time because of the drinking break.
43'
Cillessen saves! Peralta releases Giovani into the box and the forward challenges the keeper with a low driven effort from a tight angle. Cillessen makes the block and keeps the game level.
42'
So it's not only the players suffering from the conditions, but that should not fully excuse the erratic play throughout.
40'
By the way: The portion of the stands that is exposed to the sun is not fully filled. It seems spectators have retreated in order to search for cover inside the arena.
38'
Miguel Layún remains the danger man for Mexico down the left hand side and van Gaal might need to rearrange things at halftime, because Paul Verhaegh doesn't look strong against the opposing full back.
36'
Wesley Sneijder has a hard time getting to the ball and that contributes to the lack of creativity on the Dutch side. The Galatasaray man tries to track down a deep one on the left side right now, but it bounces out for a goal kick.
34'
We're underway again.
32'
That said, although the Elftal seems to be short of ideas, the draining heat surely plays into what we see as well. You have to manage energy and Proença breaks play for the first arranged "cooling break". There will also be one in the second half.
30'
Well, it's not the most exciting sequence right now. Mexico have decided to lure the Netherlands themselves and fell back, but all Oranje does is poking the ball around in midfield.
28'
Robin van Persie receives a ball over the top and has clear sight of the goal for a moment, but fires the shot from a tight angle well wide.
26'
Mexico still controls the majority of possession and is the more determined side, but the opposing defense has settled a bit in the last minutes and contains El Tri well.
25'
The Elftal is content with sitting deep in their own half and look out for their transitional game. The fans meanwhile are not and are booing the slow play.
23'
Robben sprints down the middle and is clearly brought down at the edge of the box. But Proença is unimpressed for some reason.
21'
The resulting corner leads to nothing, but Mexico applies continued pressure to the Dutch defense.
19'
Is the stage too big for Jasper Cillessen? The keeper produces a second capital error and his men have to clear inside the danger area. The ensuing challenge on Herrera was a bit high, but not enough for a penalty.
17'
Herrera sends it wide! Giovani gets in behind Kuyt on the right side and cuts back a pass to Peralta in the box. The forward is surrounded and calmly lays it off to Herrera, who finds the gap between multiple defending feet and misses by inches.
16'
Robben tries to accelerate on the left side, but is forced wide and can only get a throw-in out of it. He believes his cross may have touched Rafael Márquez arm, but the referee waves it off.
14'
Newly installed Verhaegh has problem to contain Miguel Layún on the left flank and the Mexican full back can break through again delivering a low pass across the six yard box. But nobody is there to poke the ball home.
12'
Mexico is slightly more engaged so far, but we're still waiting for the first chance of the game.
10'
Louis van Gaal needs to make an early change, de Jong is visibly limping. That's unfortunate for the Elftal, but at least Martins Indi is good to go after his concussion.
9'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Bruno Martins Indi
9'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Nigel de Jong
8'
Jasper Cillessen doesn't look too confident as he is off his line and tries to clear an aerial pass. He produces a rather wild ball that uncontrollably bounces to the middle and is fortunately picked up by a teammate.
7'
Holland tries to build confidence and is happy to keep possession at the back in the early going. They can't quite get into the danger area so far.
6'
Miguel Layún is pressing his luck early and goes for another ranged one cutting into the middle from the left, but he sends the low effort wide again.
4'
Robin van Persie tries to squeeze a ball through to the starting Robben, but the Bayern star is cut off and Ochoa eventually claims the ball.
3'
Miguel Layún sends a first effort from 25 yards high.
1'
An interesting tidbit to start the game: The fast-paced Elftal will surely look for their chances on the counterattacks, but Mexico has yet to give away a single shot on target in transition.
1'
Portugese referee Pedro Proença gets us underway!

Kick-Off
Both teams surely don't want to think further than the next 90+ minutes, but given a very winnable quarter final matchup against Greece or Costa Rica, the superior side could be up for a long run going forward. What will prevail today, the finesse of Netherlands or the passion of Mexico? Either way, we fully expect an exciting encounter!
Miguel Herrera fields the team that beat Croatia 3-1 in the most convincing showing by the Central Americans so far, but has to replace José Juan Vázquez in the defensive midfield. Veteran Carlos Salcido takes over the vacant spot and faces the tough task of slowing down the dynamic Dutch offense. El Tri is confident they can spring a surprise today and reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986.
Robin van Persie is back from suspension for the Netherlands and takes over up front while Dirk Kuyt remains in the starting lineup because Martins Indi still hasn't fully recovered from suffering a concussion against Australia. Louis van Gaal also chooses to go with Paul Verhaegh over Daryl Janmaat in his back four. The Netherlands hope that Arjen Robben can carry his stellar play from group stage to the knockout phase, the Bayern star has been performing on elite level so far in this tournament.
The lineups can be found here.
El Tri has grown some confidence as well in group stage. They held Brazil to a scoreless tie and only came in second because of the inferior goal difference after wins over Croatia and Cameroon. Herrera's tenacious side has only conceded one goal in group stage and is carried by that Central American passion. The conditions in Fortaleza could also benefit Mexico as temperature will hit 30 degrees Celsius.
The runner-ups from 2010 surely left no doubt that they belong to the favorites in this edition as well. As winners of group B, they impressively thrashed Spain in a Finals rematch, came from behind against Australia and claimed the top spot against Chile. Oranje believes they can do better than four years ago and win the World Cup this time, but are aware that Mexico presents a tough challenge.
Janosch Ferda is commentating for you. Enjoy!
