Fulltime Summary:
Who would've thought that Costa Rica could win this group? Well technically Italy and Uruguay could still come first if they managed to improve their goal difference and if Costa Rica lost against England. But this seems quite unlikely by now, seeing how the Ticos beat two former world champions and maybe even will beat the third one, too. They were superior in the beginning and defended well later on. All in all you can say that it was a quite even game, with both teams having 10 attempts and 6 shots on target. Though Italy had more possession (68:42), they didn't manage to use that to orchestrate moredangerous attacks. Apart from two Balotelli chances in the first half, Prandelli's team had few efforts worth mentioning, though they did play more offensively after the half-time break. But Costa Rica's defense was just too strong and made their opposition wear off more and more in this high temperature. With their tactical finesse, the Ticos managed to maintain the lead and proceed to the next round, simultaneously kicking England out of the tournament.

Full-Time
90'
Brenes has a great effort! His curled shot from about 23 metres just goes pass the right post.
90'
Bolaños stumbles in a duel with Barzagli in the box, but he doesn't get the penalty he wants. This is probably for the best, though the defenders action isn't really reassuring. Four minutes of stoppage time will be added by the way.
90'
It doesn't look like the Azzuri can do something about the impending defeat. The have a croner-kick from the right and Cerci's cross finds Cassano. But his header isn't good enough and misses the target.
88'
Chiellini is quite lucky to get this free-kick! While sprinting along Ureña, the Juventus defender can't control the ball and finally tumbles. Though there is no contact at all, Italy get a set piece in their own box.
85'
Ureña has an attempt! He receives the ball right in front of the penalty area and makes a few steps to the right. But eventually his shot is blocked.
82'
Insigne should take his time! After a great chipped ball from Pirlo the Napoli forward finds himself completely alone at the edge of the box, but immediately shoots instead of placing himself in a more beneficial position. His attempt goes onto the stance.
81'
Pinto makes his third and final substitution, sending Brenes on the pitch for Ruiz. It's quite astonishing that the Ticos' head coach doesn't replace the striker with a defender!
81'
Substitution (in) Costa Rica -> Randall Brenes
81'
Substitution (out) Costa Rica -> Bryan Ruiz
78'
By the way, if Italy don't score at least two goals in the remaining minutes, it would mean England's elimination. On the other hand, if Costa Rica retain the lead, they will head into the next round.
76'
Over and over, Italy are trying to create more scoring opportunities, but their attacks are stopped by the Ticos' massive defense. The Azzuri have to pick up the pace, after all the only have about 15 minutes left.
74'
The temperature and humidity obviously also take a toll on the Costa Ricans, despite them being a Central American team that should be able to cope with heat. Therefore Campbell is replaced by Ureña.
74'
Substitution (in) Costa Rica -> Marcos Ureña
74'
Substitution (out) Costa Rica -> Joel Campbell
71'
José Cubero (Costa Rica) is shown a yellow card
Well now the Ticos receive their first booking, too. Cubero places himself in front of the ball while Pirlo is about to take a free-kick. Clearly this is a yellow card.
70'
Italy make another change and coming on the pitch is Cerci, an additional striker. Prandelli takes Marchisio out, so clearly the team manager wants to strengthen his team's offense.
70'
Substitution (in) Italy -> Alessio Cerci
70'
Substitution (out) Italy -> Claudio Marchisio
69'
Mario Balotelli (Italy) is shown a yellow card
That's ridiculous! The ref didn't book players from both teams for similar and even worse challenges, but he shows Balotelli a yellow card for this? While in an off-the-ball situation in the opponent's box, the striker is tearing his opponent for a short time.
68'
The tired looking Tejeda is replaced by Cubero, Jorge Pinto is trying to reinforce his defense.
68'
Substitution (in) Costa Rica -> José Cubero
68'
Substitution (out) Costa Rica -> Yeltsin Tejeda
66'
That's not an offside position! Abate tries to find Insigne with a long diagonal ball onto the left and the referee wrongfully prevents the Italians from attacking.
64'
Costa Rica manage to perform some really good looking passes! The handle the ball with few touches, picking up the pace. Unfortunately, the final pass onto the left wing is intercepted.
62'
Cassano has his first effort, but it's not a dangerous one. His shot from the edge of the box is deflected and therefore slowed down, Buffon picks up the ball quite easily.
59'
There it is... almost. Costa Rica have counterattack and Bolaños dashes forward, but he's offside.
57'
Prandelli takes Candreva off the pitch and replaces him with S.S.C. Napoli's Insigne on the pitch, who's far more offensively oriented.
57'
Substitution (in) Italy -> Lorenzo Insigne
57'
Substitution (out) Italy -> Antonio Candreva
54'
It's quite obvious that the Azzuri are now looking to get full control of the game, pressuring the Ticos into their own half. Ruiz and Co. are waiting for their opposition to make an error that enables them to counterattack.
51'
All in all Italy are acting more offensively now! Left fullback Darmian dashes forward and cuts to the right at the left corner of the box. His attempt looks great, but goes over the bar with a whoosh!
49'
Bolaños tries to make a cross from the left, but it's blocked by Abate. The following corner comes to nothing.
47'
That could've been a penalty, too! Balotelli has the ball in the box and passes it back, but simultaneously he's tackled by Duarte. The defender doesn't touch the ball at all.
46'
Prandelli makes his first player change, replacing Motta with Cassano. Since the latter is a dedicated forward, Italy probably will change their formation a little bit. It's safe to say that Cassano will act a second striker just behind Balotelli.
46'
Substitution (in) Italy -> Antonio Cassano
46'
Substitution (out) Italy -> Thiago Motta

Halftime Summary
The game started with a very slow pace, seeing both teams creating almost no chances at all. But after 15 minutes, Costa Rica grew stronger and managed to put Italy's defense on the spot. The Azzuri seemed to have problems with the climate and the pressure of their opposition, but after about half an hour the Europeans were able to control the ball and more often get into the Ticos' box. Subconsequently Balotelli had to not so bad efforts, but in between the Costa Ricans showed that they have what it takes to score. Effectively, they did so right before the half-time break, as Ruiz converted Díaz' cross with a header. But Italy were lucky just before they conceded the 0-1, since a foul against Campbell wasn't penalised by the ref, otherwise the Ticos could have had a penalty.

Half-Time
44'
Goooal for Costa Rica, 0:1 by Bryan Ruiz
Who cares about the penalty, Costa Rica manage to convert their next chance! Díaz sends in a long cross from the left wing and finds Ruiz at the rear post! The PSV Eindhoven miedfielder isn't properly marked and brings it home with a beautiful header!
43'
The ticos should have a penalty! Campbell is sent forward with and dashes into the box from the right. He's felled by Chiellini, but the ref doesn't use his whistle!
42'
Costa Rica's chances are not good enough! This it's Duarte shooting, but again Buffon has no difficulties in catching the ball.
39'
This time Ruiz tries his luck from about 18 metres distance, but his effort is just too weak. The ball rolls onto the goal and into Buffons hands.
37'
Bolaños' attempt isn't bad at all! He shoots from the edge of the penalty area, but Buffon can punch the ball to his left. Subconsequently the ref grants the players a quick break for drinking.
35'
It seems like Prandelli's team is taking over control, shifting play into their opposition's half. Italy also increasingly manage to get the ball into the box!
33'
The Azzuri are getting stronger! Pirlo sends in a cross from midfield and Motto does a flick-on with his header. This way the ball comes to Balotelli, who immediately reacts with a powerful half-volley. Navas can't catch the ball, but picks up the rebound.
31'
This is why we love Pirlo! Without any preparation, he picks out a long ball into the box, where Balotelli manages to lob the ball over Navas. But his attempt misses the target.
28'
That's Italy's first attempt! Motta has an effort from the edge of the box, but his shot gies widely off the left post.
25'
Maybe the climate does have an effect on the Azzuri? Pirlo and Co. are playing really slow, passing the ball back and forth. Of course, this makes it easier for the Ticos to defend.
23'
Italy have some difficulties in getting the ball forward and creating some chances, somehow all their passes into the box are intercepted.
20'
That wasn't so bad! While Díaz and Abate are fighting for the ball at the left corner flag, it seems as if the Italian lashes out and hits his opponent in the face. But actually there's barely a contact and it doesn't look like the Milan defender is doing it on purpose. Referee Enrique Osses rightfully doesn't dignify this with a reaction.
18'
Right now Italy can't get a hold of the ball because Costa Rica put some nice passing on display. The Central Americans get another corner, but Campbell's cross can't create any danger.
15'
La Sele are applying much pressure on the defending line when Italy has the ball! This time Barzagli is forced to play back to Buffon, but his pass is not good enough and therefore goes out of play. Again, Bolaños following cross looks quite decent, but this time the Azzuri are able to make a clearance.
12'
So far it's a rather unspectacular start with the teams mostly playing the ball in midfield. Italy's passes into the box aren't precise enough yet, this way Costa Rica can defend quite easily.
10'
That went pretty wrong! Balotelli passes to Marchisio, who then wants to play a fast ball onto the right wing. But his pass proves unreachable for Abate.
7'
That's a great corner! Bolaños swings it in and his curved cross finds Borges at the six-yard-box, but the midfielder's header goes just over the bar.
5'
Well one could easily penalise this with a booking! Duarte is holding Marchisio in midfield after the Italian picks up the pace. But the referee only grants the Azzuri a free-kick.
3'
Pirlo almost can intercept the ball in the opposition's half! But the 35-year-old can't control it after a really bad pass from Duarte.
1'
This would've been a great start for Italy! Pirlo plays one of his dreaded long balls, finding Marchisio in the front. But his Juventus teammate is offside.

Kick-Off
Both teams faced only once in 1994, back then Italy won 1-0 in a friendly match.
Of course the Azzuri stressed that Costa Rica are "a very good team", as Balorelli stated and the striker added: "we'll show them the respect they deserve by going out and giving everything we can." The Ticos on the other hand seem quite confident and are not looking to gain only one point today, at least that's what midfielder Jose Miguel Cubero said: "When you play for a draw in football, you usually end up losing. We're going for the win against Italy."
Before the world cup started, most people thought of the Ticos as the outsiders, presuming that two of ther other teams were likely to proceed. But now everything is viewed differently, as Costa Rica's Assistant coach Paulo Wanchope stated: "It's a big surprise for the world - everyone expected either Uruguay or Italy or England to go through. For us, it wasn't a surprise because we know the great talent that we have. We will keep working and keep surprising the world."
Also, Andrea Barzagli and Daniele De Rossi recovered from minor injuries which made it impossible for the duo to participate in training on Monday. In contrast to Italy's first match, Mattia De Sciglio is part of today's roster since he overcame his muscle problem.
Prandelli's captain Gianluigi Buffon recovered from his ankle sprainand will replace Salvatore Sirigu, who filled in for the former winner of the IFFHS "World's Best Goalkeeper" award. The Paris St. Germain goalie stated to have no problem with sitting on the bench: "I have to be realistic, there's no competition between me and Gigi at all. He's more than just a player. He told me how happy he was for me to play, but I'd be happy if he recovered in time for Costa Rica."
On the other hand, Costa Rica's midfielder Christian Bolaños is hoping that the high temperature and humidity will prove to be an advantage for him and his team: "Italy have great players like Balotelli and Pirlo, who controls all of their play, and we have a lot of respect for them. But we'll hope to benefit from the heavy climate. We are used to playing in those kinds of temperatures." In fact, Italy's Daniele De Rossi said his team was "dying from the heat" in last year's Confederations Cup. But since the Azzuri prepared themselves with sauna sessions before the WC, they should be able to handle the conditions.
Prior to this match, one of the main subjects was the heat in Recife, but Prandelli stated this wouldn't affect his players: "We've known for a long time that we were going to be playing Costa Rica in these kind of conditions. We've adapted accordingly, so tomorrow we will have no excuses. We're not afraid of the heat. The only thing we should be afraid of is our opponents."
Since Italy beat England already in their first game, the Azzuri are now the ultimate favourite in this group. Of course Cesare Prandelli's squad has to watch out against the Ticos, after all they celebrated a 3-1 victory over Uruguay in their first match of this WC.
This group offers a rather rare constellation after Uruguay won their second game against England (2-1), with three teams having three points right now. This way all of the four teams still have a chance to proceed to the next round. However, the Three Lions depend on Italy, since the Azzuri have to win against Costa Rica and Uruguay to make it even possible for Rooney and Co. to stay in the tournament.
