Fulltime Summary:
Argentina march on into the final against Germany and Holland will face the hosts Brazil to decide who will finish on third place! Neither the Elftal nor the Albiceleste were able to bring their a-game today, making the game being very balanced overall. The South Americans had more possession in the beginning, but failed to display any kind of dominance. Instead, Oranje managed to catch up with their opposition, but all in all both sides lacked courage and the willingness to risk something. As a result, neither of the teams were able to create any dangerous chances in the first half. This continued to be the case after play resumed, putting an absolutely slow and uneventful performance on display. Both sides had only one noteworthy attempt each, with Higuaín narrowly missing the goal in the 75th and Robben failing to find the right timing to shoot in the 90th minute. So extra time was needed to determine a winner, but it didn't provide us with a goal, either. While Robbens attempt from long range in the 99th minute was literally rather a long shot, Argentina had two chances in the final minutes. All in all, Argentinia had 47:53% possession and 8:7 attempts (5:3 on target). But again the ball didn't find the back of the net, which forced both teams into the penalty shoot-out. With the Elftal missing two of their shots, it is Alejandro Sabella's team proceeding into the final match.

Full-Time
120'
Penalty scoredArgentina -> Maxi Rodriguez
Oh, what a bitter ending for the Netherlands! Maxi Rodriguez also shoots mid-high, but onto the left hand side. Cilessen is there to make a touch, but the ball still deflects from his fist into the back of the net!
120'
Penalty scoredNetherlands -> Dirk Kuyt
Holland aren't eliminated, yet! Kuyt converts with a mid-high shot into the right side of the goal.
120'
Penalty scoredArgentina -> Kun Agüero
Agüero has no difficulties in converting, his precise shot into the bottom left corner is unreachable for Cilessen.
120'
missed a penaltyNetherlands -> Wesley Sneijder
Sneijder fails to convert! His shot into the bottom left corner is saved by Romero!
120'
Penalty scoredArgentina -> Ezequiel Garay
What a great penalty! Garay smashes the ball into the top right corner, you just can't save a penalty like this!
120'
Penalty scoredNetherlands -> Arjen Robben
Robben looks just as confident as Messi and finishes into the bottom right corner.
120'
Penalty scoredArgentina -> Lionel Messi
The Argentinian skipper proves to be very confident and converts with a strong finish into the bottom left corner! Cilessen is there, but he can't prevent the impact!

Second Half Summary:
There it is, the next game of the knoch-out stage will be decided in a penalty shoot-out! This time the Elftal can't count on Tim Krul saving the day, but Jasper cilessen surely is eager to show that he's being as good a penalty killer as his teammate. Or will the Argentinians suceed to the final as the only South American team?
120'
missed a penaltyNetherlands -> Ron Vlaar
Unbelieavable! Vlaar's weak attempt onto the left corner of the goal is parried by Romero!

119'
Now Holland are looking to play with few touches on a very tight spot, but they fail since Kuyt can#t control Robbens pass at the edge of the box.
119'
Robben tries to make an impact on the left wing, but there's no way through. Mascherano is able to clear for a throw-in.
117'
Again the Albiceleste fail to score! This time it's Messi with a cross from the right, finding Maxi Rodriguez at the left channel of the box. But his shot lacks momentum and therefore is an easy catch for Cilessen.
115'
This could've been the winning goal! Argentina send a long ball into the opposition's box and Palacio is there to convert with a header. But his attempt goes right into Cilessen's hands.
114'
Sometimes you wonder why - apart from being tired, of course - the players don't risk it all and try to hit a lucky punch at the end. Solely relying on penalties displays an even greater risk.
112'
Both teams seem to have little energy left, with neither of them trying to enforce some attacks and to pressure their opposition. It more and more looks like we'll go into penalties again at this World Cup.
109'
Zabaleta and Kuyt clash with their heads and the Argentinian sufferes a bleeding injury. It looks like he's able to continue but has to change his jersey since it's soaking blood.
107'
That's a bold move from Cilessen! For the second time in this match the young goalkeeper shows guts and manages to outplay an opponent in front of his own goal.
106'
Second Half of extra time begins
105'
Halftime Summary:
The first half of extra time didn't grant us any new insight, although Holland managed to improve their stats: 53:47% possession and 5:6 attempts (2:3 on target) are a slight overhaul, nothing more. Both teams already used up their substitutions, so van Gaal can't bring Tim Krul for penalties.
105'
First Half of extra time ends
105'
Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Netherlands) is shown a yellow card
That's a really stupid challenge by Huntelaar, who is rightfully booked by the referee! The Schalke 04 striker follows Mascherano starting at Argentina's half and eventually tackles him from behind. Cüneyt Çakır virtually has no other choice than booking the 30-year-old.
103'
More and more, the Netherlands are trying to take over control in extra time. In exchange for losing possession, la Albiceleste have some interesting counterattack approaches.
101'
Fresh bloud is coming in for Argentina, with Maxi Rodriguez replacing Lavezzi.
101'
Substitution (in) Argentina -> Maxi Rodriguez
101'
Substitution (out) Argentina -> Ezequiel Lavezzi
99'
At least, we have a good chance here! Robben shows courage and fires a bouncing shot from about 25 metres, but Romero as no difficulties in catching it.
98'
The game is getting wilder, with the midfielders giving up being disciplined and attacking their opponents more aggressively. It's obvious that they will do everything they can do for a win.
96'
Van Persie is really a shadow of his former self since the round of sixteen, this continued to be the case today. So it very understandable that he's now replaced by Huntelaar, who scored the late winner against Mexiko converting a penalty in injury time.
96'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Klaas Jan Huntelaar
96'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Robin van Persie
93'
Unsurprisingly, both teams resume play in extra time with a slow pace. If this doesn't change, a penalty shoot-out will grow more likely by the minute.
91'
Kick-Off extra time
90'
Second Half Summary:
Robben really could've scored the winner there, if he just followed his instincts and put the ball in the back of the net at the earliest possible opportunity! The MVP of the Dutch team had the chance to prevent the teams from going into extra time, but now they have to go on for at least 30 additional minutes. Will we see van Gaal put up another tactical stroke of genius? So far this was a completely disappointing match, if you had higher expectations of the offensive qualities of both teams. Holland had 51:49% possession and 4:6 attempts (1:3 on target). So clearly, neither side managed to nearly reach their potential. Instead it was a match of two teams trying to prevent any mistakes and not taking any risks. Still it's a thrilling match, of course, so lets see what they've got in extra time!
90'
Second Half ends
90'
Why is he hesitating? Robben runs through the middle and past three Argentinian defenders, then the left-footed winger finds himself completely alone in the box. But instead of shooting from about ten metres distance, he continues to approach the goal. Eventually, Robbens attempt from about four metres is blocked by Mascherano's sliding tackle.
88'
They just don't get to finish their attacks! Mascherano dashes forward with the ball and arrives at the edge of the box. But his pass into the box comes to late and is blocked.
87'
The Netherlands have a corner from the right, but it's immediately cleared away by the Argentinian defense.
84'
Is this a sign of desperation? Rojo has a shot from about 27 metres distance, but fails to put Cilessen on the spot. The keeper catches the ball easily and then is attacked by Agüero. The striker acts in a similar way as Thiago Silva did against Colombia and should be booked for interference of the goalkeeper. But Cüneyt Çakır doesn't show the Manchester City forward the yellow card.
82'
Sabella obviously is trying to strengthen his attack, substituting Palacio and Agüero for Pérez and Higuaín. So now, Argentina have an additional forward on the pitch.
82'
Substitution (in) Argentina -> Kun Agüero
82'
Substitution (out) Argentina -> Gonzalo Higuaín
81'
Substitution (in) Argentina -> Rodrigo Palacio
81'
Substitution (out) Argentina -> Enzo Pérez
79'
If someone like Robben or Messi don't show a stroke of genius, we'll probably go into extra time. But who knows, something unexpected could happen any time...
77'
What's wrong with Holland and Argentina, are they just nervous? It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that both teams are showing their worst performance at this World Cup today.
75'
Wow, what an amazing finish! For a moment there, everyone thought it would be a goal, but it's not. Messi finds Higuaín with a short cross from the right. The striker is able to extend the ball with his right foot, but it goes just past the right post.
73'
This match isn't worthy of a World Cup semi final. The game lacks movement and speed, since the teams fail to pick up the pace.
71'
Lavezzi could have a shot! Suddenly the PSG striker breaks through the left channel and manages to get into the box. But his attempted flick shot is blocked by de Vrij.
70'
Janmaat returns on to the pitch and Holland more and more gain possession. Will van Gaal's side take over now?
67'
The crowd should be more supportive! Blind fails to play a clean pass but rather passes the ball out of play, without any Argentinian player pressuring him. The people on the stands react by booing, that's not nice at all.
66'
Kuyt sends in a cross from the left hand side, but it's headed away by the Argentinian defense.
65'
It started raining in sao Paolo, lets hope that the players don't lose their footing on the wet pitch.
62'
De Jong, wo initially was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament, seems to be tired and is replaced by Clasie. This means that as of now - with the exception of Michel Vorm - the whole Dutch squad participated in at least one match of this year's World Cup.
62'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Jordy Clasie
62'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Nigel de Jong
61'
Janmaat is rushing onto the edge of the box and loses control of the ball at the end. This way the right back is forced to slide right into Biglia's feet and the Lazio midfielder needs medical attendance.
58'
Well, at least they try! Lavezzi cuts inside from the right wing and finds Higuaín with a short cross. But his attempted header is denied by de Vrij.
57'
So far neither of the teams are able to create dominance. Although Argentina look like they have more control, the possession actually is split 50:50.
56'
Wow, what a great sliding tackle! Vlaar does his best to get the ball off Messi and the Aston Villa man succeeds!
54'
The Netherlands have a counterattack! Robben tries to get past three defenders rather than passing the ball onto the right to van Persie. The Dutch captain doesn't really make an appearance so far.
52'
Vlaar obviously has problems in dealing with Messi, who tries to get through from the left. But his teammates come to the Dutch defenseman's aid.
49'
Martín Demichelis (Argentina) is shown a yellow card
Demichelis had it coming! He already should've been booked in the first half, now he's shown the yellow card for a rather harmless foul. The former Bayern Munich defender taers Robben's jersey for a very short period of time, but it's enough for a booking.
48'
That's a strange scene you don't see often! Garay loses his left shoe and makes a clearance with his right foot, so he has enough time to put the other one back on. But the ref tells him to go off the pitch to do that.
46'
Van Gaal makes his first substitution, taking the already booked Martins Indi off the pitch, replacing him with Janmaat. The Feyenoord man will act as right back, while Kuyt switches to the left. Therefore, Blind will be acting as centre back now.
46'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Daryl Janmaat
46'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Bruno Martins Indi
46'
Second Half begins
45'
Halftime Summary:
Well, so far this wasn't such a great match like the first semi final, but it's well-balanced and stays exciting! Understandably, both teams didn't risk too much, but tried to focus on tactics and avoiding any mistakes. Argentina had over 65% possession at the beginning, but it didn't take long until the possession ratio normalized. With 53:47% possession and 3:1 attempts (only 1:0 going on target), Argentina had little predominance to show. Instead, la Albiceleste could've conceeded a goal after a horrible interception right in front of their box. But the Netherlands failed to thrive on that. While van Gaal's team defended very well, Messi & Co. weren't able to apply more pressure onto their opposition, making it easy for the Dutch. In the last ten minutes before the half-time break, the number of fouls increased and at first, Cüneyt Çakır hesitated to book the culprits. But fortunately, at the end of the half the ref broke the spell and should be alert for punishing harsh challenges in the second half.
45'
Half-Time
45'
Bruno Martins Indi (Netherlands) is shown a yellow card
Finally, Cüneyt Çakır takes the yellow card out of his front pocket! Martins Indi is rightfully booked for a challenge on Messi, but you still have to ask why previous attacks such as those against Sneijder weren't penalised with a booking.
43'
Oranje have some possession now, but they fail to put it to a good use.
41'
In the past minutes, fouls are increasing and the players seem to care little for their opponent's health. Of course this isn't a brutal match like the one mentioned earlier, yet. But the ref would be wise not to let it go into that direction.
38'
While Martins Indi commits a foul on Messi, Sneijder has to go off the pitch to seek medical attendance. One could've also booked the Dutch defender for his foul on the Barcelona striker, but Çakır obviously doesn't see it that way. This reminds us of Spanish ref Carlos Velasco Carballo, who tried to calm down the match between Brazil and Colombia in a similar way, not showing yellow cards for a long time but staying consistent in his decisions. We all know the result: The match escalated and Neymar was injured badly.
36'
It's time for a yellow card! Demichelis hits Sneijders shin with a brutal kick at the sideline, but isn't booked for that. That's a clear mistake made by the referee.
34'
Is Mascherano really alright after his head clash? Standing At in front of his own box, the Barcelona man passes the ball directly onto Wijnaldum, who's unable to thrive on that horrible mistake.
32'
Holland have to consecutive corners from the left, but both times Romero's able to punch it away.
31'
To sum it up: Nothing worth mentioning happened so far, even if you don't compare the game with last night's one. But this makes things more thrilling, of course.
29'
At first it looked worse, but Mascherano is able to continue and comes back onto the pitch.
27'
Again, this is painful to watch! Mascherano and Wijnaldum clash with their heads, the Argentinian loses his balance and looks like he almost loses consciousness, too. But luckily he's held by quick-witted Martins Indi before falling onto the ground and then goes off the pitch for medical attendance.
24'
Ouch! The corner swings in and Vlaar hits Garay in the face with his right leg outstretched. One could easily punish this with a penalty, but Cüneyt Çakır doesn't.
23'
Lavezzi is very agile right now! The PSG striker runs past Blind on the right and crosses the ball, but Vlaar puts it out of play for another corner.
20'
Messi swings in the corner, but it comes to nothing.
19'
De Vrij prevents Higuaín from shooting! At first the centre back seems to be displaced, but then he quickly returns to his position, marking the Napoli man. The former Real Madrid striker is served by Zabaleta with a low cross, but de Vrij is able to clear for a corner.
17'
So far neither of the teams are able to control the game and create dangerous chances. They're still feeling out their opposition.
14'
That looks promising! After Vlaar fells Pérez at the egde of the box, la Albiceleste have a free-kick from about 18 metres distance. But Messi's direct attempt on goal is an easy catch for Cilessen.
13'
Sabella's defense should be more focussed! Robben loses the ball to Mascherano on the right hand side, but the Barcelona midfielder passes the ball directly to Sneijer! The playmaker shoots immediately, but his attempt goes wide.
11'
It's a free-kick for the South Americans after de Vrij is penalised for a foul. Messi sends in a cross from the left, but no one is able to reach it and convert.
9'
For a short moment it looks like Holland take over possession, but they can't keep the ball long enough. Argentina have much more possesion in the beginning.
6'
This time Kuyt finds Robben with a long ball, but the 30-year-old is offside.
5'
Robben suddenly gets into the final third! The left-footed winger dashes forward through the left channel, but his effort is denied by Zabaleta.
4'
Argentina are trying to maintain possession, it seems like they're looking to gain some confidence first.
3'
This is the first time the Albiceleste almost breaks through! Mascherano passes the ball onto Pérez, who cuts inside from the right and is able to go past some defenders. But eventually he's stopped and loses the ball.
1'
The game is underway!

Kick-Off
Being the runner-up in 2010's World Cup, the Dutch players seem to be wanting more, as Dirk Kuyt underlined: "The semi-finals are fantastic, but we know what it feels like to lose a World Cup, and we would love to win. Argentina are a world-class team and they deserve to be in the last four. But we want to measure ourselves against the best, and not only measure, but win. That's why we're here."
Argentina's head coach Alejandro Sabella seemed very content with his teams performance in this tournament, stating that "our intention was to go as far as possible, and to try to get in among the best four teams. Having reached this stage, we will never settle for losing now, but for me this group of players have already won,"
Oranje's only injured player left is Leroy Fer, who missed the last games of his team due to a thigh problem. On the Argentinian side, it's Ángel Di María missing the match. The Real Madrid midfielder also suffered a thigh injury in the quarter-final match against Belgium and will be replaced by Enzo Pérez as he did in that game.
The same goes for centre back Ron Vlaar, who suffered a knee injury but also is able to play today. But there is another player coming back from injury which is quite a surprise: Nigel de Jong, who previously was ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to a tear in his groin, is also part of the starting lineup.
Hollands skipper Robin van Persie was doubtful for today's match, since the striker suffered a stomach problem. But he recovered in time and therefore is part of the starting XI, as van Gaal already clarified yesterday: "We have more than 24 hours before the match and Robin van Persie is a very important player for us. In principle, my captains always play, but only if they're 100 percent."
On the other hand there's Lionel Messi, who of course is one of the world's greatest players for many years now. But until maybe two years ago, he didn't manage to bring his a-game to his national team, while staedily performing suberbly at Barcelona. Now it's the first WC where "la Pulga" is showing his full potential. In fact, in this year's tournament Argentina were heavily dependent on their star player scoring the winner or at least initiating attacks which resulted in crucial goals.
Although one shouldn't focus solely on one player, both sides have one man who stands out among the rest of the team: Van Gaal's team can rely on Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben, who "just" scored three goals, but played brilliantly in all of his 2014 world cup matches so far.
La Albiceleste beat Belgium in their quarter-final match 1-0, with an early goal scored by Gonzalo Higuaín.
Holland beat Costa Rica after penalties in the quarter-final after both teams were unable to score in 120 minutes. Head coach Louis van Gaal had a noticeable influence since he substituted his goalkeeper just before the end of extra time. Bringing Tim Krul on for Jasper Cilessen was maybe crucial, as the Newcastle goalie was - not publicly, but inside his team - known for being a penalty killer. He foresaw the right direction on all the penalties and was able to parry two of them. Later on, van Gaal was praised for being a tactical genius.
Then it took 20 years until both nations clashed another time in the quarter finals of the 1998 World Cup in France. This time the Netherlands won 2-1 and proceeded to the semi finals, but eventually lost 4-2 to Brazil after penaltiy shoot-out. Finally, Argentina and Holland faced each other in the group stage of 2006's WC in Germany and drawed 0-0.
Who will join Germany in Sunday's World Cup final? With the Elftal and the Albiceleste, we have two big football nations facing each other in a remake of a truly historic clash. Both teams met at a World Cup on four occasions: 1974 the Dutch beat Argentina 4-0 in group stage, but only four years later the South Americans had their revenge, winning the final 3-1 after extra time.
Azad Derakhshani will provide the live commentary for this match.
Welcome to tonight's semi final between the Netherlands and Argentina!
