Fulltime Summary:
After rather painful 70 minutes for Belgium they finally achieve the happy end! The Red Devils were somewhat superior with 65:35% possession and 16:3 shots (10:1 on target), but conceded a penalty at the middle of the first half. Algeria showed a really dedicated defensive effort, not letting their opposition get past them at all for a long time. It was namely Marouane Fellaini's substitution in the 65th minute which caused an improvement in his teams attacks. The giant had several chances inside the box and managed to convert a cross after 70 minutes. Suddenly the game shifted and Marc Wilmots' team applied utmost pressure on the Desert Warriors. Finally it was another sub who scored the winning goal: Mertens finished a counterattack with the 2-1 goal and subconsequently his team played more confidently, maintaining the lead for the remaining time. But still, Belgium has to improve a lot if they want to impress people at this WC!

Full-Time
89'
Of course the Red Devils aren't keen on playing quickly, but rather keep the ball in their possession without taking any risks or just head to the corner flag.
88'
Again it's Fellaini who can create danger! He narrowly misses the ball at the six-yard-box, otherwise is surely would've been the 3-1. Maybe Wilmots should think about positioning the polyvalent player as a forward.
86'
Now the Belgians seem rather confident and are able to relocate play in front of the Algerian penalty area. Algeria obviously wants to attack and score the late equalizer, but it doesn't look like Belgium will let them.
84'
This is it for Medjani, he goes off and instead the FC Porto striker Ghilas will play for the remaining minutes.
84'
Substitution (in) Algeria -> Nabil Ghilas
84'
Substitution (out) Algeria -> Carl Medjani
83'
Fellaini's substitution really has an impact! The gigantic midfielder almost converts a cross from the right wing, but his header goes right over the bar.
80'
Goooal for Belgium, 2:1 by Dries Mertens
There it is, Belgium finally take the lead! It's de Bruyne with a precise tackle against Taïder enabling Hazard to dash forward from the left hand side. It's a 3-to-4 counterattack and the Chelsea playmaker finds just the right timing to pass the ball onto the right. This way Mertens finds himself completely alone and can convert from about 16 metres with a powerful shot right into the higher right corner of the goal!
77'
Algeria react with all out defense now, they probably would also be content with a draw, still gaining one point.
75'
The equalizer seems to be a wake-up call for the Red Devils! Suddenly there's more movement in their offense and they now are able to pressure their opposition's defense more effectively. Even Hazard makes a kinda fresher impression than before.
73'
By the way, Belgium's last goal scorer in an international tournament before Fellaini was their current team manager, Marc Wilmots.
72'
Vahid Halilhodžić makes another substitution, Mahrez is replaced by Getafe CF player Lacen.
72'
Substitution (in) Algeria -> Medhi Lacen
72'
Substitution (out) Algeria -> Riyad Mahrez
70'
Goooal for Belgium, 1:1 by Marouane Fellaini
Finally, Fellaini scores the equalizer! Standing on the left wing, Hazard passes back de Bruyne and the Wolfsburg midfielder has quite some space. He superbly crosses the ball into the box and Fellaini can convert with a header into the higher right corner of the goal!
68'
The corner swings in from the right and a Algerian header rebounds to Fellaini. He immediately shoots from about six metres, but M'Bolhi parries again.
67'
Origi achieves, what Lukaku couldn't: He has a chance! The striker gets the ball at the border of the box and shoots from about 14 metres! But M'Bolhi is able to clear it for a corner.
66'
Algeria also make a change and introduce Slimani for Soudani.
66'
Substitution (in) Algeria -> Islam Slimani
66'
Substitution (out) Algeria -> El Arbi Soudani
65'
Vertonghen has quite some shot power! But he lacks precision, as his attempt to the left side of the goal goes widely off target.
65'
Wilmots already uses up all his substitution quote, Dembélé is replaced by Manchester United midfielder Fellaini.
65'
Substitution (in) Belgium -> Marouane Fellaini
65'
Substitution (out) Belgium -> Moussa Dembélé
62'
On the other hand, the Belgian supporters are beginning to sough every time the Red Devils have the ball in midfield and hesitate to pick up the pace.
60'
Feghouli stimulates the Algerian supporters with some nice dribbling! They immediately make themselves heard.
58'
Wilmots seems to have seen enough and takes Lukaku off the pitch. The Chelsea striker who was on loan at Everton had no attempt in this game and only won 15% of his duels. He'll be replaced by the 19 year old Origi.
58'
Substitution (in) Belgium -> Divock Origi
58'
Substitution (out) Belgium -> Romelu Lukaku
56'
Taïder swings in the corner from the left hand side and Soudani's header goes just pass the right post! Algeria's few attempts are still more dangerous than the Belgian ones.
55'
Right now the Desert Warriors can get the ball into the opposition's half and they even get a corner!
53'
Algeria's front line pressure is really impressive! The Fennec Foxes attack the Belgian defenders and even Courtois immediately and Feghouli almost can block the goalie's clearance.
51'
Mertens seems to reanimate the Belgian offensive! He plays a one-two with Dembélé on the right hand side and tries to serve the ball for Lukaku. But M'Bolhi is able to intercept the pass.
49'
The first minutes after the half-time break aren't really convincing, but at least Belgium have another corner kick. This time it's Mertens providing the cross from the left and he finds Witsel in front of the right post! But the head of the Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder goes over the bar.
47'
What a shame! Soudani dribbles from the right wing onto the center of the field and is able to maintain possession for quite some time. But instead of looking for a straight way into the box he goes backwards and finally loses the ball.
46'
Play resumes and Wilmots makes his first substitution: Chadli goes off the pitch and is replaced by S.S.C. Napoli winger Mertens.
46'
Second Half begins
46'
Substitution (in) Belgium -> Dries Mertens
46'
Substitution (out) Belgium -> Nacer Chadli

Haltime Summary:
So far this was a quite unspectacular match. The Desert Warriors are leading at half-time break and somehow one wants to compliment them for that. One would've expected the Red Devils to show their offensive power and in fact it was the Belgians having 67:33% possession and 8:2 attempts (5:1 on target). But Marc Wilmots' team didn't manage to create danger, since the Algerians displayed a pretty tight defense that wouldn't let anything go past. Additionally, the Fennec Foxes converted a penalty in the 25th minute after an almost ridiculous foul by Jan Vertonghen, who without any need took down Feghouli in the box. The Europeans' attempts consisted mostly of unconvining long wrange shots and it was especially Eden Hazard who played a disappointing match. Maybe he can show his talent in the second half.
45'
Half-Time
44'
Well okay, that's a good play for once! Hazard finds Chadli on the left side of the box and the Tottenham winger has a shot, but his effort is easily saved by M'Bolhi.
42'
That's really a disappointing first half from Belgium so far. They just can't convert their possession into dangerous chances.
39'
Though Alderweireld misses the ball while trying to shoot it from about 18 metres, he's fouled by Mahrez and Belgium get a promising free-kick opportunity. But Vertonghen's hard shot goes right over the bar.
37'
Belgium's second corner of the game comes to nothing, too. So far the red Devil's set pieces aren't very frightening at all.
36'
Somehow the Belgians manage to shift the game more and more into the opposition's half and in front of the penalty box. Witsel has another attempt from distance and his dipping shot is really dangerous this time! But M'Bolhi can parry the ball for a corner.
34'
Nabil Bentaleb (Algeria) is shown a yellow card
Algeria now also have their first booking. Bentaleb is penalised for his careless ellbow challenge against his Tottenham teammate Dembélé.
33'
Well that's a start at least! Hazard picks a fine pass for de Bruyne and the Wolfsburg midfielders cross is blocked for a corner, but it comes to nothing.
30'
After Hazard is fouled by Taïder, Belgium have a fre-kick from the left wing. But de Bruyne's cross goes passes all players and just misses the right post.
27'
Belgium look a little bit shocked right now, but at least Dembélé tries to wake up his teammates with a wide shot. But his effort is pretty harmless.
25'
Goooal for Algeria, 0:1 by Sofiane Féghouli
Feghouli takes the penalty himself and scores! His low shot goes halfway onto right side of the goal and is successful because Courtois jumps onto the other side. This is Algeria's first WC goal since 1986!
24'
Jan Vertonghen (Belgium) is shown a yellow card
Vertonghen is rightfully booked for holding and attacking the Valencia midfielder.
23'
Algeria have a penalty! That's really an unnessecary and stupid foul from Vertonghen! The Tottenham player clumsily takes down Feghouli on the right side of the penalty area.
21'
Long range shots seem to be their only option for now. The Red Devils can't find any gaps in the opposition's defensive line, making it difficult for the Belgians to get into the box. Maybe some dribbling from players like Hazard would help to loosen up Algeria's defense.
18'
Leicester City winger Mahrez has the first chance for Algeria! The 23-year-old gets a hold of the ball on the left side of the penalty box, but his attempt from about eight metres distance goes widely off target.
17'
Well that's a rather poor effort from van Buyten! The gigantic defender shoots from about 40 metres, but his attempt is blocked.
15'
So far the game doesn't pick up the pace, but rather developes slowly. Witsel seems to be the key player in midfields since it's mostly him distributing the ball. But still, his team can't create any danger in front of the goal.
12'
The Desert Warriors apply much pressure when Belgium's having the ball, making it hard for the Red Devils to gain some space in the offense.
9'
Belgium's midfield is making quite a good impression so far, passing the ball quickly and with few touches. Hazard though, who's considered the star of this team, stands out with some bad passes.
7'
Slowly, the Red Devils are having more possession, but subconsequently are fouled in fornt of their own penalty area. Mahrez' misdoing is penalised with a free-kick for Belgium.
4'
Both teams are feeling out their opposition, so far neither of the teams can gain permanent control of the ball.
2'
After van Buyten commits a foul against Soudani, Algeria get a free-kick from midfield. Feghouli's cross comes in, but is immediately cleared by the Belgian defense.

Kick-Off
Belgium and Algeria faced each other ni two friendlies in 2002 and 2003. They drawed in their first match (0-0), while Belgium won the second one with 3-1.
The Fennec Foxes' most famous player would probably be Sofiane Féghouli from CF Valencia, but European football supporters could also know players like Nabil Bentaleb (Tottenham Hotspurs), Faouzi Ghoulam (S.S.C. Napoli) or even Djamel Mesbah (A.S. Livorno).
One would assume that the Algerians would have a plan to stop playmaker Eden Hazard (FC Chelsea), but their assistant coach Nourredine Kourichi pointed out that Belgium just have too many offensive treats: "If we focus on Eden Hazard, we could have some nasty surprises. We know his qualities but also his weak points, but we can't focus especially on him, there are others, like Lukaku. We don't have a special plan against Hazard. We can mark and stop an opposing player with our own strategy."
Divock Origi and Kevin de Bruyne were suffering from ankle knocks after Saturday's training session, but were able to participate at the next one on Sunday. The Wolfsburg midfielder de Bruyne is also part of the starting lineup for this game.
Wilmots also responded to the expectations of the media: "The foreign press has on occasions labelled us as such (as outsiders for the title) which is very kind of them but I must remind everyone that while we have come a long way we had a lot of ground to make up. It has been 12 years without nothing (referring to the gap between major finals)."
His squad still consists of highly talented players, mostly playing in the Premier League, but he might be quite right since Belgium didn't participate in any big tournament since the World Cup 2002 and the European championship in 2004, which they co-hosted with the Netherlands.
Though being by now well-known insider tip for this world cup, one could assume that their would be much pressure on the Belgian team. But their team manager, the former Schalke 04 midfielder Wilmots stated otherwise: "Pressure? What pressure? Pressure is for example when a child is seriously ill in hospital. This is football: I see nothing but sheer enjoyment from the players here. In just two years we have come an incredibly long way. Now the players are going to do everything they can so they do not go home with regrets."
Having only three friendlies in 2014, the Algerians won all of them and probably gathered some confidence from that. Though they only beat three teams that don't participate in this year's world cup: Slovenia (2-0), Armenia (3-1) and Romania (2-1).
Algeria on the other hand finished first in their group of the second qualiying round - losing only once in six games - and were able to beat Burkina Faso in the subsequent third round. After losing 2-3 in the first leg, the Desert Warriors managed to win their home match with 1-0 and proceeded to the main tournament stage because of the away goals they scored in Ouagadougou.
It surely didn't hurt that Marc Wilmots' team also managed to stay unbeaten in their 2014 friendlies. While losing one of five friendly matches in 2013 (0:2 to Colombia), since March the Red Devils drawed with the Ivory Coast (2-2) and beat Luxembourg (5-0), Sweden (2-0) and Tunisia (1-0) without a great deal of problems.
Ther Red Devils came first in their European qualifying group and didn't even lose once (eight wins, two draws). This confident impression in particular and probably having the most talented Belgian squad of all times made Belgium the most cited insider tip for this WC.
