Endgame Summary:
Congratulations for this achievement. Mexico more than deserves this victory due to the better chances and the ambitions which were visible throughout the whole match. The defensive outline was made to neutralise the Croatian top stars Rakitic and Modric, the fast counterattacks and strong corners made the difference even clearer. Therefore, this fight knows only one winner: the Aztecs. Kovac's eleven was too risk-averse, no courage could be felt. It is a pity to not see players like Mandžukić or Modrić anymore. But in total the team performance was just not balanced enough to continue. Mexico will have a hard time against the Netherlands but with a disciplined performance just like today's everything is possible for El Tri in this World Cup.

Full-Time
89'
No doubt, Mexico will continue the tournament. Croatian efforts are not strong enough. Perišić has the last chance to score but is not lucky striking his volley from the penalty spot directly into the arms of Ochoa.
89'
Ante Rebić (Croatia) is sent off
Brutality is the ugly friend of Croatian frustration. Rebić, who in total just played some twenty minutes challenges Peña quite some time after the ball has left the area. The drama is on...
87'
Goooal for Croatia, 1:3 by Ivan Perišić
Also the Croats score! Ivan Perišić can be proud to be the first guy to score against Mexico. Neither Brazil nor Cameroon did manage that! His strong strike from few meters was almost bombed the second post away, now 3:1 it is.
84'
Now the scorer of the second goal is permitted a shower ahead of time. Another reason to celebrate for the numerous fans in green.
84'
Substitution (in) Mexico -> Marco Fabián
84'
Substitution (out) Mexico -> Andrés Guardado
82'
Goooal for Mexico, 0:3 by Javier Hernández
Incredible! Now Herrera's team are sending the Kovac and his players back to the Adriatic costs. Hernández scores his goal after a corner was headed on to the second post. The forward was left completely alone - of course, a guy like El Chicharrito would penalize this irresponsible defensive behavior.
79'
Peralta, although not being too visible today, receives standing ovation by the enthusiastic supporters while walking down the line. Márquez' club mate from Mexican champion Club León enters.
79'
Substitution (in) Mexico -> Carlos Peña
79'
Substitution (out) Mexico -> Oribe Peralta
75'
Goooal for Mexico, 0:2 by Andrés Guardado
And there is the second one! Only three minutes after the 1:0 Croatia is to offensive and lets the Aztecs launch a fast counter attack. A direct ball from the right side has Guardado as adressee who scores from 10 meters not leaving Pletikosa with a glance of a chance.
74'
Kovac reacts to the new circumstances and brings Jelavić for Pranjić. This change in which a forward enter for a midfielder is the right sign to attack.
74'
Substitution (in) Croatia -> Nikica Jelavić
74'
Substitution (out) Croatia -> Danijel Pranjić
72'
Goooal for Mexico, 0:1 by Rafael Márquez
Now it is in! A corner finds the forehead of oldie but goldie Rafa Márquez who smashes the header into Pletikosa's goal. Corluka lost the duel against the 35-year-old. Mexico truly deserves this goal due to the far better chances and bigger ambitions to score.
69'
Substitution (in) Croatia -> Ante Rebić
69'
Substitution (out) Croatia -> Ivica Olić
66'
José Juan Vázquez (Mexico) is shown a yellow card
Vázquez challenges his opponent in an unfair way and is booked.
65'
What a chance! The corner after the penalty situation is about to bring the 1:0 for Mexico, as the sliced cross is directed to the second post. But Corluka is there and clears.
63'
Hernández claims the penalty with full-throated screaming at the ref!The game was about to getting a lower profile with less linked attacking moves as a nice cross is controlled by Guardado on the central-left. He shoots and clearly hits the arms of Srna. Although no real intention can be detected, Srna obviously prevents the ball from going further and his arms are not where they should be. That should have been a penalty. The Mexican players go wild.
62'
The long awaited entrance of "El Chicharrito" Hernández is celebrated by the fans. Maybe he is the one to bring the dynamics back to Herrera's team.
62'
Substitution (in) Mexico -> Javier Hernández
62'
Substitution (out) Mexico -> Giovani Dos Santos
58'
The young Austrian-born Kovacic, who left his home to play for Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 15 and was transferred to Inter Milan only few years later replaces Vrsaljko.
58'
Substitution (in) Croatia -> Mateo Kovačić
58'
Substitution (out) Croatia -> Šime Vrsaljko
57'
Good move by Mexico! A pass is nicely slipped through to Dos Santos. Already in the box the Villareal striker would have the possibility to finish but is challenged by Srna. Great challenge by the old hand who is playing in Ucraine for Shakhtar Donezk.
53'
The South-East Europeans are getting stronger while Mexico opens up too many spaces and do not find the way to Pletikosa as still in the first half.
51'
Misunderstanding in the Mexican back line. But Croatia is not able to make use of the reluctance to play the hard-line football their coach would demand from them.
49'
Modric with a good dribbling! One player, two players cannot divide Madrid's strategic planner from the ball. But then "the wall" Márquez comes across Modric's way and transfers the ball out of the pitch. The corner ends in nothing.
46'
The second half has just started as Peralta suddenly appears in the box after a long-distance pass. But Lovren is on his side and clears this tricky situation.

Halftime Summary:
We are following a true fight for the continuation of the tournament. Mexico was closer to scoring the first goal of the match. A chance by Herrera hitting the bar from long-range was followed by an opportunity for Peralta who would just have to hit the ball but - embarrassing enough - didn't even manage to touch it. Croatia gave everything to fight back but the Mexican strategy to keep Modric and Rakitic factually out of the game was the key to the light dominance of El Tri. As Brazil is leading against Cameroon at the moment, Márquez and friends are currently qualified for the eighth final. But things change and we will soon know who will acceed to the next round in the end.

Half-Time
43'
The match is getting rougher, the tacklings harder and the quarrels between the players more emotional. The heat is on!
42'
In the course of a corner launched by Guardado Pletikosa is put under high pressure by the green dressed Latin Americans. He falls down, the referee blows the whistle. And that was a foul! Good job by the ref so far.
40'
The free kick resulting from Márquez' foul is decent enough to leave the El Tri supporters sighing loudly. But again, a meter or more a the difference between in and out.
39'
Rafael Márquez (Mexico) is shown a yellow card
The skipper challenges Perisic unfairly and stops a counterattack in a rude way. He claims that the action beforehand the counteroffense was a hands preventing a corner from entering the box. And, to be honest, Márquez is completely right with this opinion.
36'
Despite the Croatian improvements, the Mexicans are back up front. But all their efforts do not create real danger now.
33'
No sign of life of the praised central midfielders Rakitic and Modric. Mexico controls the game play, long balls and tight spaces make it hard for the Croation super stars to take the reins.
29'
The Croatians are doing better than just minutes ago. The two big opportunities of Mexico woke them up. In this situation it is Perisic to get the ball in a promising position. But slices the half-volley high and wide into the Brazilian sky. He's able to do that better, but should start to show his skills as of now - otherwise holidays will arrive earlier than actually wanted.
27'
At least a strike from long distance. Pranjic smashes the rebound onto Ochoa's goal but his first-time shot ends up a meter over the target.
25'
Although the match has lost a little bit of its high pace, it's Herrera's team to continue moving forward. Although they would need the victory much more, the Croatians somehow refrain from attacking.
23'
Mexico would already deserved the lead. Too great chances were missed - one time, the bar had something to say against a goal of El Tri, the next time Peralta's inability to score a rather simple ball was problem.
19'
The Aztecs are about to score! A straight pass finds Peralta who is just 5 Meters ahead from Pletikosa. But he misses this big chance horrendously. The crowd moans up, Peralta must have buried that one without any doubt.
15'
Almost the 1:0 for Mexico! Dos Santos, Herrera and Peralta are greatly linked and move forward quickly. Herrera tries his luck from long range and strikes a marvellous shot towards the goal. Pletikosa is already beaten but the bar saves Croatia from the early set back.
14'
As a consequence, the Croats are given a corner. This represents a big danger for Ochoa, but neither Srna nor Olic can hit the ball towards the ball.
13'
A nice Croatian ball is slipped through to the right side. Perisic centres a low cross directly. But defense boss Márquez is attentive and clears the situation.
10'
The resulting free kick is quickly brought long range to Herrera. But the winger is not able to control Márquez' through-ball only some meters ahead of the goal.
9'
Ivan Rakitić (Croatia) is shown a yellow card
Rakitic truly deserves the yellow card after a heavy tackling on Vazquez. Oviously, a certain glance craziness is not left in the changing rooms.
7'
First danger for Mexico! A corner from the right is centred nicely towards the penalty spot. The Mexican do not react as quickly as it would have been necessary. But Pranjic misses high and wide. The ball is sent to the Atlantic ocean.
4'
Both teams seem to be a little bit nervous. With some unfair challenges they try to earn the respect of the opponent. Actions around the boxes are not witnessed in the first minutes.

Kick-Off
No need to mention that this Croation goal might come a little bit too late. Kovac's guys still need three more goals to accompany Brazil to the next round.
Kick off, we are getting started! We will surely have some fun here!
Only few minutes are left until this thrilling clash starts. The referee comes from the football crazy nation of Uzbekistan, he is the first to enter the playground. The anthems are being sung in these moments. Let's enjoy the lovely voices of the players before getting concentrated!
Kovac’s eleven is lined up as widely known as the opponent’s squad. The pride of the team is the central midfield with the newest Barcelona transfer Ivan Rakitic and Madrid’s Luca Modric. Up front, old star Olic will support Mandzukic to make ends meet and shoot the necessary goals against a firm Aztec defense. The only if-at-all weekness can be found in the defense in which Corluka and Lovren did not leave the most secure impression until now.
The North Americans do not change anything in their first eleven. And this is the main surprise. Many expected the nomination of Manchester United’s Javier “El Chicharrito” Hernández, who remains on the bench for the third time in this World cup. Though, the other crucial player are lined up all at once. Márquez will act as the undisputed director of the defensive line, Villareal’s former Barcelona player Dos Santos, whose father is Brazilian, is in charge to distribute the passes to the dangerous zones of the pitch and the high performing keeper Ochoa will try to keep the zero one more time.
On the other side, former Barcelona star Rafa Márquez praises the high quality of the red-white chequerboard-patterned team: “Croatia have loads of very talented players. They’ve got very quick wingers who can get to the byline and put the ball in the box. They’ve also got a lethal striker and some of the best central midfielders around. They’re a great team, so it won’t be easy. We’ll have to give our best to get at least a point and move on to the next phase.” Therefore, so the 35-year-old Champions League winner argues, “Keeping clean sheets has been key for us and we’re determined to keep that going.”
The head coach of the South-East Europeans, Nico Kovac, puts the tension his team is facing frankly in the following words: "The match against Mexico will be like a final. We have to get some rest, because a serious opponent awaits. Mexico are strong, but so are we. The Mexico players are very patriotic, just like us, and they have a great team spirit. They play some aggressive football with a lot of pressing. They are strong going forward, but also have some weaknesses in defense, like Brazil showed us."
The situation is clear: If Brazil does not lose against Cameroon only one of the two teams will continue playing the tournament. Mexico being one point ahead of Croatia, needs only a draw but for sure will do everything to avoid the group B winning Dutchmen in the next round. Croatia has only a chance when beating, and hence, eliminating Mexico.
”Buenos dias!”, “Dobra večer!” and a warm welcome to Recife’s Arena Pernambuco. We are here to see one of the most exciting games in the young World Cup 2014 – Mexico versus Croatia. We will follow the fight for the qualification to the next round. The kick off will be at 9:00 p.m, about two hours later the Netherlands and Chile will know their respective rival in the round of sixteen. This match surely is going to be a great one!
