Football: Markarian to coach Greece

Uruguayan Sergio Markarian will coach the Greek national team through the Euro 2016 qualification stage, the Greek football federation said Thursday.

Markarian, 70, is expected in Greece over the weekend and his debut will be in Budapest on March 29 when the Greeks play Hungary in Euro 2016 Group F action.

Greece are bottom of the group with just one point in four matches with Romania heading the table with 10 points followed by Northern Ireland (9), Hungary (7), Finland (4) and Faroe Islands (3).

Markarian, who will be receive a reported 350,000 euros ($397,000) for his one-year services, has coached Greek clubs Iraklis (2004-2005), Panathinaikos (2002-2004) and Ionikos (1998-1999).

His last job was coaching Peru from 2010 to 2013 and he has also managed Paraguay twice (1999-2002 and 1992-1993).

Markarian has also coached Danubio (2010), Universidad de Chile (2009-2010), Cruz Azul (2007-2008), Libertad (2005-2007), Sporting Cristal (1996-1997), Universitario (1993-1995), Cerro Porteno (1990-1991), Sol de America (1987-1989) and Olimpia (1983-1986).
