Thai midfield star left off Asian Games list

Thailand's hopes for the Asian Games suffered a blow when they were informed midfielder Jakkaphan Pornsai could not compete in South Korea next month after being omitted from the country's player list.

The experienced 27-year-old Suphanburi FC player had been tipped by Thai media to captain the team at the Games.

"We wanted to have Jakkaphan join, but the Olympic Committee said that he couldn't because his name was not on the list," national coach Kiatisuk Senamuang told AFP on Thursday.

He said that Jakkaphan had not been registered on the initial list of 40 players because he was brought in as a last-minute replacement.

Asked whether he planned to appeal to the event organisers, Kiatisuk said: "It depends on the Olympic rules. I don't think we can do it."

The national team are now training on the Thai resort island of Phuket, after being delayed on their journey from Bangkok by a bomb hoax which resulted in emergency baggage checks.

But Kiatisuk said the teams had not been worried. "The players were hungry at the time," he said.
