The 2020 Major League Soccer All-Star game will feature the league's best against an All-Star lineup from Liga MX at Los Angeles FC's Banc of California Stadium, MLS said Wednesday.

The exhibition event -- an annual feature of the MLS season -- will take place on July 29, 2020 and will mark the game's return to Los Angeles for the first time since 2003.

The format of the game has changed over the course of 24 MLS seasons, with some All-Star games featuring clashes between players from the league's Eastern and Western conferences and some featuring the MLS All-Stars taking on "guest" rivals.

Since 2005 the contest has featured the MLS All-Stars against a European club. Atletico Madrid won the 2019 edition in Chicago 3-0 last July 31.

The first non-US club to feature in an All-Star game was Mexico's Guadalajara, who fell 3-1 in 2003.

MLS commissioner Don Garber said next year's format offered a further chance to strengthen ties with Mexican first division Liga MX.

"As we celebrate our 25th season, we wanted to deliver an unique and unprecedented format for our annual All-Star Game," Garber said. "Our first ever game between the best of MLS and Liga MX's top players is the perfect way to build on the growing relationship between the two top soccer leagues in the region."

LAFC coach Bob Bradley, who guided the club to the Supporters' Shield as the team with the best regular-season record, will coach the MLS All-Stars.
