German FA is 100th to join UN's climate scheme

The German Football Association (DFB) announced Thursday it had become the 100th sports organisation to join the United Nations' climate change initiative.

The DFB joins the likes of the National Basketball Association (NBA), world football's governing body FIFA, World Rugby and International Ski Federation (FIS) in supporting the scheme.

Led by the International Olympic Committee, the initiative targets a series of measures to combat climate change including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In a statement, the DFB says it plans to reduce its CO2 emissions and consumption of paper and water.

Environmental considerations are already going into the planning and building of the new state-of-the-art national academy in Frankfurt and preparations for the Euro 2024 finals to be held in Germany, the DFB said.

On Wednesday, Formula One's governing body FIA also announced they have also signed up.
