Rangers prove doubters wrong, says McCall

Rangers manager Stuart McCall says his side proved their doubters wrong after they progressed to the semi-finals of the Scottish Premiership play-offs on Sunday with a 3-2 aggregate win over Queen of the South.

Derek Lyle scored in the 35th minute at Ibrox to cancel out the Gers slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg.

However, captain Lee Wallace popped up in the 60th minute to fire home the equaliser and set up a two-leg semi-final showdown with Hibernian.

"I think we probably proved a lot of people wrong. Going in at half time there was probably a lot of people thinking that Rangers had bottled it again," McCall said.

"But we said at half-time that if we keep creating we will make opportunities, we just need to make sure we keep it tight at the other end.

"I think in the last 10 or 15 minutes Queens had nothing to lose and we were a little bit tense. But it's job done and I'm proud of the players as they kept at it.

"I don't think over the two games anyone would deny we were the better side. It was more tense than we would've hoped if we had got the first goal but we found a way to get through and that's what it was about."

Rangers now face Hibs, who finished second in the second-tier Championship, at Ibrox on Wednesday in the first leg of the semi-final, with the winner of that going through to a final against Motherwell, who will finish second bottom of the Premiership.

The Easter Road side triumphed on both their previous visits to Ibrox, but with just one defeat in their past 17 matches, including a defeat of Hibs at Easter Road, Gers gaffer McCall says his side will approach the crucial match in a confident manner.

"I think there are two sides going in on Wednesday both on the back of good form and good results," McCall, whose side are bidding to return to the top flight after an absence of three years, said.

"When the big games have come along at the back end of the season we've stood up. We've beaten Hearts and we should have beaten them over there, we've beaten Hibs and we've beaten Queen of the South when there has been a few doubters.

"Hibs are a good side, but so are we. I think they will be two tight games and we are looking forward to them.

"So we go into the match in a confident manner, but I'm sure Hibs do as well. I'm sure it will be nervy and tight, but we're looking forward to it."

While Rangers have faced two tough matches against Queen of the South, Hibs have had 18 days off and manager Alan Stubbs took his players to Spain for a training camp.

But despite having just two days to recover before facing the Edinburgh side at Ibrox, Rangers boss McCall says his players will not be tired.

"We've got plenty of time to rest and come Wednesday we will be ready," the Gers gaffer insisted.

"The carrot is too big to be tired mentally or physically. We won't have any tiredness in the ranks and we'll be ready to go.

"I think 18 days off from your last game is a bit long, but I'm sure they are recharged and refreshed."
