Newcastle's De Jong suffers collapsed lung

Newcastle striker Siem de Jong has been ruled out for another two months after suffering a collapsed lung. De Jong underwent surgery on Tuesday after the Netherlands international sustained a repeat of a similar complaint to one he had while with Ajax in 2013.

"We are all hopeful that the surgery I have had will ensure I don't have any repeat of the condition in the future," De Jong told Newcastle's website.

"After four months of hard work getting back to full fitness it is such bad luck to suffer another setback.

"It's very sad for me personally, especially since I was almost back in contention and feeling great.

"I am determined to come back stronger as soon as possible."

De Jong, who has won six caps for his country, has had a nightmare spell at Newcastle since joining from Ajax last year.

The 26-year-old made three appearances for Newcastle before he suffered a serious thigh injury in August and had only recently returned to training with the first-team squad.
