Brown signs new deal with Sunderland

Wes Brown has signed a one-year contract extension with Sunderland, the Premier League club confirmed on Friday.

Brown was due to be out of contract in July and the former Manchester United centre-back had already been included on a list of free agents circulated by the Premier League.

But Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat was keen to keep the 35-year-old and handed him another 12 months at the Stadium of Light in his first major decision since opting to remain in charge of the Black Cats.

Advocaat succeeded Gus Poyet as Sunderland boss on a short-term deal in March and saved the club from relegation before announcing he would step down.

The former Glasgow Rangers manager reversed that decision last week and moved quickly to tie up Brown, who has made more than 80 appearances for Sunderland since joining in 2011.
