Sheff Utd beat Reading to boost promotion bid

Sheffield United got their bid for automatic promotion to the Premier League back on track with a 1-0 win at Reading on Tuesday.

United made the breakthrough on the hour through a fine first-time finish from Iliman Ndiaye.

That was enough for a valuable victory that moves the Blades seven points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough, with the top two guaranteed promotion to the Premier League.

United had been in poor form, with Saturday's 1-0 loss at Blackburn their third defeat in four league outings, but Ndiaye's winner kept them firmly in control of their promotion destiny.

West Bromwich Albion moved within four points of the play-off places with a 1-0 win against struggling Wigan at The Hawthorns.

Daryl Dike's 27th-minute header was enough to extend West Brom's eight-match unbeaten home run in the league.

Huddersfield failed to score for a third successive game, but their 0-0 draw against Bristol City lifted Neil Warnock's side off the bottom of the table.

The Terriers remain six points from safety and have won just once since Warnock took charge.

Bristol City have lost just one league game since December 29, but Nigel Pearson's men spurned a host of chances to recover from their recent defeat against Cardiff.
