Cardiff City will host local rivals Swansea City in the Premier League on Sunday in the first match between two Welsh clubs in the history of the English top division.

Ahead of the game, AFP Sport looks at some of the most significant milestones in the history of Welsh football.

1876: Foundation of Football Association of Wales

- In a meeting in Wrexham, north Wales, the Football Association of Wales is founded. It is the world's third-oldest national football association. Wales's first international match is a 4-0 loss to Scotland in Glasgow.

1907: Wales win Home Championship

- Inspired by Manchester United winger Billy Meredith, Wales win the British Home Championship for the first time after beating Ireland and Scotland and drawing 1-1 with England.

1924: Cardiff finish second in First Division

- Cardiff record the highest-ever finish by a Welsh club in the English top flight, missing out on the league title to Herbert Chapman's Huddersfield Town on goal average.

1927: Cardiff win FA Cup

- The FA Cup leaves England for the first and, to date, only time after Cardiff beat Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

1950: Trevor Ford breaks world transfer record

- Welsh centre-forward Trevor Ford becomes the world's most expensive footballer when he leaves Aston Villa to join big-spending Sunderland for a fee of £30,000 ($48,000, 35,000 euros).

1958: Wales reach World Cup quarter-finals

- After beating 1954 runners-up Hungary in a group-stage play-off, Wales fall 1-0 to eventual champions Brazil in the last eight of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, with Pele scoring his first goal at the tournament.

1959: John Charles finishes third in Ballon d'Or

- Powerhouse centre-forward John Charles is voted the third-best player in Europe after impressing in his first two seasons at Italian giants Juventus.

1991: Wales beat world champions Germany

- A year after their victory against Italy in the final of the 1990 World Cup, the newly unified Germany lose 1-0 to Wales in a European Championship qualifying match at Cardiff Arms Park.

2013: Cardiff promoted to Premier League

- Cardiff secure promotion from the Championship to the English top tier after a 51-year absence, two years after Swansea went up.

2013: Gareth Bale joins Real Madrid

- Welsh forward Gareth Bale joins Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal that potentially makes him the most expensive player in the game's history. British media reports claim fee is £85 million, which would be a new world record, but Madrid insist it is lower.
