Eduardo backs Casillas to bounce back

Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo Saturday backed Spain's Iker Casillas to bounce back from his mauling at the hands of the Netherlands, hailing him as one of the best in the world.

Eduardo said "one or two mistakes" by Casillas, 33, in Friday's 5-1 rout should be measured against a distinguished career for the Real Madrid custodian including trophies at every level. "Everybody has bad days but nobody can question his value. He's one of the best in the world and I'm sure he's going to get over it," Eduardo told reporters at Portugal's training base near Sao Paulo.

Braga's Eduardo, 31, has much experience of the pain suffered by goalkeepers as after a heroic 2010 World Cup, he has since been relegated to the bench for club and country. In Friday's rematch of the 2010 final, won by Spain, Casillas was twice caught out by the Netherlands' Robin van Persie, and he was faulted over Arjen Robben's second goal. "Everybody has a bad day but us goalkeepers, sometimes people forget that we're humans also and we make mistakes," Eduardo said.

"Nobody doesn't (make mistakes), but ours are more (important) because we let in goals. But that's the difference, how we can get over it and pass that moment. "I'm sure he's going to do it because the value he's had all these years, you cannot question because he makes one or two mistakes. He's still one of the best goalkeepers in the world." Eduardo added that the unpredictable result had alerted Portugal, who open their campaign against Germany on Monday, that nothing was certain in football. "It is a warning for us that are no easy games, and anything can happen in football" he said. "No one expected that, but we are ready and we are going to give our best against all the teams."
