Lecce have hired Roberto D'Aversa following previous coach Marco Baroni's departure after securing Serie A survival, the club announced on Tuesday.

In a statement Lecce said that former Parma and Sampdoria coach D'Aversa, 47, has signed a "one-year contract with an option to extend in the event of safety from relegation being achieved".

D'Aversa hasn't worked as a coach since being sacked by Samp in January last year, halfway through his first season at the club.

Previously he had led Parma up from Italy's third tier to Serie A, where he guided the club to two respectable mid-table finishes.

He was fired in August 2020, recalled later that season in an unsuccessful bid to save the club from relegation and then sacked again at the end of the campaign.

His predecessor Baroni took Lecce up to Serie A in 2022 and then ensured survival on the penultimate day of last season before leaving after failing to agree an extension to his contract.

Italian media report that 59-year-old Baroni is set to take over at Verona, who announced that Marco Zaffaroni had quit his job earlier on Tuesday.
