Fulltime Summary:
Yet another favorite needs a good portion of luck to advance to the quarter finals! The Red Devils gradually took over the game late in regulation, but were not able to beat Tim Howard, who finished the game with record-breaking 16 saves. After consequently going in front in overtime, Belgium collapsed and the 1-2 set up a frantic finish by the US-Boys. The game probably should have been decided in a penalty shootout, but it fits the script that the next favorite has been severely challenged but not knocked out. The Europeans complete the field of the best remaining eight teams and will be meeting Messi and Argentina on Saturday!

Wilmots' team is clearly rattled and can't get out of their half.
117'

Braaaadley! The States play it short and brilliantly set up the midfielder in front of Courtois, but Bradley can't beat the keeper from close range.
112'
This is truly the game of the subs as Green wins a free-kick on the right side. It comes to nothing, but the US-boys are granted another chance because Chadli brings down Jones.

Bulldog Romelu Lukaku muscles through once again, but Howard's left leg thwarts the next goal. Meanwhile, Wilmots makes the final substitution tonight and replaces Hazard, who underperformed.

111'
Substitution (out) Belgium -> Eden Hazard
111'
Belgium or USA? Either way, this one will be a thriller.
110'
What in the world is Belgium thinking? They overcommitted on the right side and completely exposed their centre in the last sequence.
109'
No way!?! Jones has to equalize the game as four white shirts are unmarked in the box and the midfielder pokes the ball just inches wide of the right post.
108'
Are you kidding me? The USA was as dead as one can be, but suddenly, somehow they find a way to score here.
107'
Goooal for USA, 2:1 by Julian Green
Incredible! Is that the start to a cinderella story? Michael Bradley finds the substitute with a brilliant ball over the top and the youngster volleys it home!

Second Half of extra time begins
105'
Halftime Summary:
It's hard to believe the USA can come back from being two goals down in the remaining 15 minutes. After all, the class of Belgium seems to prevail behind a prolonged fight. Right before the short break Klinsmann brings in youngster Julian Green to make anything happen.
105'
First Half of extra time ends
105'
Substitution (in) USA -> Julian Green
105'

105'
What a story! Lukaku was demoted after subpar performances and seems to power his nation to the quarter finals!
105'
Goooal for Belgium, 2:0 by Romelu Lukaku
It was only a matter of time judged by the space they had in transition. De Bruyne serves Lukaku from the left, who hammers the ball into the back of the net from eight yards.
103'
DaMarcus Beasley can't find a teammate with a cross in the middle and on the opposite side De Bruyne inadvertently fires a clearance into Jones' face. The downed midfielder started the game with a broken nose, but shakes this one off as well.

As dominant as Belgium has been, their accuracy is atrocious. Lukaku collects another miss in front of Howard.
101'
Jones needs medical attention, but is back quickly.
100'
Jermaine Jones has an effort on goal, but is blocked and also fouled by Jan Vertonghen. Would have been a dangerous position right at the edge of the box, but the official missed the call.
99'
The Red Devils are clearly fine to fall back with the lead and wait for counterattacks.
97'
Romelu Lukaku has the next effort inside the box and Howard blocks it for a corner. The injection of the Chelsea man might have been the decisive factor.
96'
Belgium tries to exploit space in transition, but Vertonghen unnecessarily slows down the attack and finishes poorly. What a missed opportunity here!
94'
Can the US-boys come back from the deficit? They already looked pretty exhausted and now will have invest even more.
93'
Goooal for Belgium, 1:0 by Kevin De Bruyne
They couldn't find the back of the net in regulation, but surely don't waste time in the extra period! Lukaku muscles down the right side shaking off Matt Besler and delivers for the Wolfsburg man. De Bruyne evades another defender and finishes from a tight angle.
92'
At least the first chance belongs to Klinsmann's side as Jones finds himself on the receiving end of a Beasley cross and heads it high.
91'
Will the dominance of Belgium carry over to the overtime or are the States able to weather the storm?
91'
Marc Wilmots takes off Divock Origi, who had two great chances to score and brings on Lukaku. Both coaches can still make one final substitution.

Kick-Off extra time
90'
Second Half Summary:
Belgium was pressing for that decisive goal throughout the second half, but time and time again failed to brilliant goalkeeping by Howard, who's the sole reason why the States are still alive. We are heading into the fifth overtime in eight knockout games. Amazing!
90'
Second Half ends
90'

90'
Dempsey tries to left the ball over the top into the box, but has too little support up front.
90'
Even though the favorite might not get the result in regulation, they definitely seem to have more energy going forward.
90'
Howard saves and saves and saves. Three minutes of stoppage time!
90'
Alejandro Bedoya outpaces Van Buyten doen the left flank, but superb defending by Vincent Kompany, who anticipates the run of the winger and intercepts him.
89'
The lead is long overdue for Wilmots, whose side has that much more to offer in this late stage of the game.
88'
Hazard has the next chance for Belgium as he aims for the near post from a tight angle but only hits side-net.
87'
USA pushes forward and wins a corner, but it only comes to a counterattack. DaMarcus Beasley does well stopping Origi on the right side though.
86'
There might be more to come, but we can already say that referee Haimoudi has not been an issue at all. Fine officiating by him and his crew.
85'
No doubt Belgium wants to seal the deal in regulation, but Tim Howard remains too much to overcome for the storming Red Devils.
83'
After a corner Daniel Van Buyten stays up front and is played behind brilliantly, but he shows why he's not a forward and misses poorly.

More chants from the stands for the US-boys, who have the majority of support tonight.
80'
Tim Howard makes yet another fine save against Hazard and is the lone reason why we are still level.
79'
Well, the resilient centre back shakes it off and is back on his feet.
78'
Ouch! González sprained his ankle after an aerial duel with Kompany and it looks like the injury woes of Klinsmann continue.
77'
Looks like we might be in for a Belgium powerplay in the remainder.
76'
Mirallas simply has to provide the lead here! He is released with a brilliant though-ball, but Howard makes the save with his left foot. Amazing goalkeeping by the Everton man!
75'
Marc Wilmots has stressed before the game how important it is to avoid extra-time or a penalty shootout. Yet we are heading into that direction.
74'
Clint Dempsey gets out in transition and has space to the edge of the box. He might have been looking for support on the wings, but decides to fire an own shot on target. Thibaut Courtois dives and buries the ball confidently.
73'
Quite a few American players are looking to run out of energy and Klinsmann chooses to replace his midfielder.
72'
Substitution (in) USA -> Chris Wondolowski
72'
Substitution (out) USA -> Graham Zusi
71'
Kevin Mirallas just powers through! He beats multiple defenders down the middle, but is stopped eventually. The ball bounces to an unmarked Origi, who can't beat Tim Howard from 14 yards.
71'
As we're heading into the last 20 minutes of the game it's worth noting that Belgium has exclusively scored during that final frame.
70'
De Bruyne voices some frustration over an offside position, but it was the right decision by the assistant.
68'
Can Belgium copycat the French victory? The Équipe finished strong and escaped with a late win.
66'
Thibaut Courtois has no problems whatsoever to intercept a cross in his six yard box.
64'
So Belgium has to settle for ranged efforts that can't threaten Tim Howard so far.
64'
Kevin Mirallas creates some space with a neat fake in front of the danger area, but there are just too many defensive legs to squeeze through.
63'
USA-chants from the stands. The fans feel their team need the support right now.
62'
The game has surely picked up some speed in the last minutes. Belgium is trying to force the issue but exposes their defense that way.
61'
Marc Wilmots does surely not want to settle for extra time as he brings on fresh legs on the wing. Mertens had one final chance seconds ago, but couldn't redirect a delivery on target at the near post.
60'
Substitution (in) Belgium -> Kevin Mirallas
60'
Substitution (out) Belgium -> Dries Mertens
58'
On the other end is Graham Zusi, who gets to a cross from the left side and his effort from ten yards is blocked.
57'
Belgium has raised the pace! Jan Vertonghen has two chances in quick succession from a tight angle. Howard saves the first and the second goes wide.
56'
Origi hits woodwork! The forward redirects a cross onto goal and his header bounces off the crossbar for a goal kick.
56'
Looks like the favorite might just need that once chance to get going. Marouane Fellaini lays an aerial ball off to De Bruyne, but his shot sails well over the crossbar.
54'
What a chance! Jan Vertonghen curls a dangerous cross alongside the six yard box from the left and both De Bruyne and Divock Origi miss the final touch by inches!
53'
Belgium has to poke the ball around the danger area as the States sit firm in their defensive formation.
52'
Marouane Fellaini goes for goal from deep and sends his effort well side
51'
It's obvious both sides don't want to risk too much for that opening goal with the stakes that high.
50'
Belgium remains the more engaged side early in this half.
47'
Cameron is dispossessed and the resulting cross from the left is flicked onto goal by Mertens. Howard has to punch it over the crossbar for a corner, but no real challenge for the Everton keeper.
47'
Graham Zusi tries to cut to the middle from the right at the edge of the box, but is met by two defenders and get bully through.
46'
No changes on either side after the break.
46'
Second Half begins
45'
Halftime Summary:
The USA proved to be the difficult task we expected them to be. Belgium had the more promising approaches on goal and upped the pressure temporarily, but their crosses couldn't find teammates in a crowded American box so far. Klinsmann's side meanwhile is not content with defending, they tried to establish their offense as well and were able to threaten Belgium throughout. Stay tuned!

DeAndre Yedlin is causing trouble on the right side for Belgium since coming on and this time the captain earns the booking for trying to stop him.
41'
Daniel Van Buyten has to clear dangerous cross from the right to the far post once again, but the tall defender is up to the challenge.
40'
Additionally, Eden Hazard has not yet found his way into the game as he plays another sloppy pass straight out for a goal kick.
38'
Wilmots' team is surely the more skilled side, but they have to fight for their chances nonetheless.
37'
At least the underdog is able to keep the ball away from their own box the last couple of minutes. Belgium might be taking a breather as well.
36'

35'
Loose touches by Klinsmann's troop prevent a quick buildup in transition. The States had numbers.

33'
The substitute does well in a first attempt and wins a corner for his team.
32'
USA indeed has to make that early substitution and DeAndre Yedlin takes over on the right wing.
32'
Substitution (in) USA -> DeAndre Yedlin
32'
Substitution (out) USA -> Fabian Johnson
31'
Looks like Fabian Johnson is unable to continue as he had to break up a run down the right side and is limping.
30'
Divock Origi finds space down the left side, has support, but is searching for his own shot. Wrong decision by the Lille man, who runs into a wall of defenders.
29'
Eden Hazard tries one from deep, but his effort presents no challenge for Tim Howard.
28'
USA can't quite get out of their half right now and the fast wingers are more and more causing trouble for Klinsmann's side.
26'
Belgium gradually claims more possession and controls the midfield. Jan Vertonghen is released on the right side behind the defense and drills the cross across the six yard box. DaMarcus Beasley intercepts and clears out for a corner.
25'
The pace of the game remains high as both sides try to move through midfield as fast as possible.
23'
On the other side it's Kevin De Bruyne who receives the ball at the edge of the box, cuts to the middle and fires a shot well wide the near post. Was a great chance but the Wolfsburg man didn't connect cleanly here.
22'
Dempsey picks up a loose ball at the edge of the box and pokes the ball for the first American on-target effort. No problem for Thibaut Courtois though.
21'
Divock Origi heads the other way, but a loose touch from the forward thwarts a possible counterattack.
20'
Jan Vertonghen needlessly gives away a corner and the ball nearly slips through to DaMarcus Beasley at the far post. The full back tracks down the ball on the left side, but is dispossessed eventually.

18'
Geoff Cameron (USA) is shown a yellow card
First booking goes to the left back for a tackle from behind.
16'
Judging the last sequence Belgium might not be ungrateful that the States try to facilitate their offense. Other underdogs have widely chosen a very defensive approach to limit the opposition.
14'
The ball movement of the underdog is looking confident in midfield, but Klinsmann's team has to watch for the Belgium counterattacks. Matt Besler tackles Divock Origi from behind, but the referee says play on and for a second the favorite has numbers up front. States are back in time though and able to cut off the opponent.
12'
The Red Devils try another corner but it comes to nothing.
11'
Since their quick start Belgium has not been able to penetrate the danger area again.
10'
The USA is mainly operating with long aerial balls, has Klinsmann chosen a traditional kick and rush approach today?
9'
The battle on the wings should be key today and both Fabian Johnson and Alejandro Bedoya seem willing to engage their counterparts defensively.
8'
... The Red Devils try to find Divock Origi up front, but the sloppy pass bounces out for a throw-in.
7'
Alejandro Bedoya tracks down a wonderful deep ball by Jermaine Jones on the left, but Belgium is able to intercept the ensuing delivery and gets out in transition immediately...
6'
The States are slowly working their way into the match. DaMarcus Beasley accelerates down the left side, but is well challenged by Marouane Fellaini and swings his cross out for a goal-kick.
5'
Michael Bradley finds some space down the middle after Eden Hazard was dispossessed but can't feed Clint Dempsey with his through-ball.
3'
Belgium surely wastes no time so far. Already the second corner flies into the American danger area and Klinsmann's men must try to settle down a bit.
2'
Belgium goes straight to work! Kevin De Bruyne plays in starting Divock Origi down the right, who outruns González before challenging Tim Howard with a low-driven shot from a tight angle. The keeper blocks it for a corner.
1'
Stars and Stripes by the way have the majority of support on the stands. Unofficial numbers estimate 20.000 American fans.
1'
The States get us underway!
1'
Kick-Off
Can a favorite finally convince today or will the USA make life as difficult as the other underdogs have been able to so far? The next two hours or possibly more will provide an answer!
Belgium has some adjustment of their own as Steven Defour will miss the match due to his red card against South Korea and Thomas Vermaelen did not recover from a hamstring injury in time. Jan Vertonghen takes over at the back four and Divock Origi replaces the erratic Romelu Lukaku up front. Eden Hazard also moves back into the starting lineup after being granted a breather in the last match with his team already being qualified for the next round.
Next to officiating the States also have some injury concerns. Jozy Altidore is available after suffering a hamstring injury against Ghana but will only make the bench today. Klinsmann switches to 4-1-4-1 system to counter the fast-paced Belgium offense, Alejandro Bedoya replaces Davis on the left wing and Geoff Cameron will take the right back spot in the back four with Fabian Johnson moving into midfield for Kyle Beckerman.
The lineups are now available here.
In front of the encounter there has been some controversy about the FIFA's decision to pick Algerian Jamel Haimoudi as referee. Klinsmann pointed out that Belgium and the official shared the same language and might have a communicative advantage. Furthermore the US knocked out Haimoudi's country of birth in the 2010 World Cup. But the coach added he didn't expect it to be a problem and hoped that the Algerian will continue his decent performances in the tournament so far.
So the USA have to like their chances despite labeled underdogs. After all they surprisingly advanced in front of Ronaldo's Portugal in group G. Coach Klinsmann is a known motivator and already achieved a major goal reaching the round of 16. But the pressure is not solely on Belgium's side, because North America has also grown on its soccer team and live coverage of the World Cup is reaching record-breaking numbers in a country normally dominated by other sports.
Are there true favorites anyway? Four matches went to overtime so far and two times a penalty-shootout had to decide in its heartbreaking fashion. France and the Netherlands advanced in regulation but needed late winners to seal the deal. If you would have to pick the most and probably only convincing showing in knockout stage, you'd be inclined to say Colombia.
Belgium emerged as clear winners of group H with nine points, but as many favorites they had difficulties in the group stage winning the games with the difference of just one goal and very late winners in each of their matches. Many expected the Red Devils to make an extended run into the knockout stage with their talented squad, but Marc Wilmots and his team have to improve play today against a resilient American team.
Commentating for you is Janosch Ferda. Enjoy!
