Endgame Summary:
England's hope of advancing to the knockout stage is about over and only slim chances remain for the Three Lions after their second 1-2 defeat. Hodgson's side showed an encouraging performance at times once again, but clearly lacked punch upfront although Rooney could finally claim his first ever World Cup goal. Returning Luis Suárez proved to be the difference maker the South Americans hoped he'd be with two crucial goals. Albeit quiet throughout, the Liverpool striker showed his lethal touch in front of Hart and buried the two chances the defense granted him. Group D could be in for a thrilling finish as three teams claim three points now before Italy and Costa Rica face off tomorrow. That's it for this one, we hope you enjoyed the coverage!

Full-Time

No, they can't. The last efforts are cleared by Uruguay and it's a final!
90'
Can the Three Lions pull of a lucky punch? Gerrard tries one from deep, but is well wide.
90'
England wastes the first two minutes with sloppy passing.
90'
We are heading into five minutes of stoppage time.
88'
Last changes for both sides as desperate England brings on another striker and Uruguay a fresh defender to seal the deal. Suárez leaves as probable matchwinner.
88'
Substitution (in) Uruguay -> Sebastián Coates
88'
Substitution (out) Uruguay -> Luis Suárez
87'
Substitution (in) England -> Rickie Lambert
87'
Substitution (out) England -> Jordan Henderson
86'
Can England come back yet again? The Three Lions are running out of time.
85'
Goooal for Uruguay, 2:1 by Luis Suárez
What a hammer from the Liverpool man! Gerrard misjudges a header after a long ball from Muslera and sends the striker on its way down the right side. From a tight angle Suárez just powers the ball through the middle over a diving Hart.
84'
Jordan Henderson is able to corral the ball after a poor clearance from Fucile, but his cross is picked off by Fernando Muslera convincingly.
82'
Uruguay force England to camp around their penalty area right now, but can't create a chance.
80'
Luis Suárez gets behind the English defense on the left side, but his cross is deflected for a corner.
79'
With his side under pressure, Oscar Tabárez brings on an additional defender. Is the coach willing to settle for a draw here?
79'
Substitution (in) Uruguay -> Jorge Fucile
79'
Substitution (out) Uruguay -> Álvaro González
77'
It's again Sturridge who receives the ball at the edge of the box and spins around his defender, but Muslera is able to palm the shot away.
76'
England tries to build on the goal and we could be in for a frantic finish. Daniel Sturridge is brought down in the penalty area after a light touch, but Velasco is unimpressed.
75'
Goooal for England, 1:1 by Wayne Rooney
He has his World Cup goal and it couldn't be more timely! Glen Johnson muscles through on the right side and delivers a fine cross through the Uruguayan area to the far post. Rooney sneaks in behind his man and just has to poke it over the line.
74'
Daniel Sturridge spins and turns at the edge of the box but can't get enough purchase on his shot.
72'
Any chance to slow down the game and milk clock is welcomed for Tabárez's side right now. It feels like they just want to get the result over the finish line.
71'
Hodgson understandably keeps changing offensive personal in search of the equalizer.
71'
Substitution (in) England -> Adam Lallana
71'
Substitution (out) England -> Danny Welbeck
70'
The South Americans fall back, patiently await England and are looking for opportunities in transition.
69'
Can England force the issue in the remaining minutes? Even a defeat would not mathematically rule out the knockout stage, but many variables would have to fall into place for that to happen. A draw would at least guarantee a deciding final group match against Costa Rica.
68'
Steven Gerrard (England) is shown a yellow card
The captain catches Cristian Rodríguez with a late challenge in opposing territory and is deservingly booked.
67'
Oscar Tabárez gets in his first substitute as well and choses fresh legs for the midfield.
67'
Substitution (in) Uruguay -> Christian Stuani
67'
Substitution (out) Uruguay -> Nicolás Lodeiro
65'
Rooney stretches to get to a low delivery from the left, but can't reach it and Muslera is able to gather the ball.
64'
Raheem Sterling couldn't build on a good showing against Italy and Ross Barkley is the first substitute for Hodgson again. Rooney might slide to the centre forward role now.
64'
Substitution (in) England -> Ross Barkley
64'
Substitution (out) England -> Raheem Sterling
62'
The full back is back on his feet and shakes off the hit like a boxer.
61'
Anxious moments for the Uruguayan side because Álvaro Pereira caught a knee to the head from Sterling and seems to be knocked out.
60'
Raheem Sterling bullies through multiple defenders from the left and tries to dive for a penalty, but the Spanish referee waves it off.
58'
The missed opportunities certainly won't help Rooney's case if this game is lost. The discussion about his place in the national team will probably continue.
56'
Muslera can continue playing after a short break.
54'
Baines delivers another fine cross from the left, Muslera gets to the ball in front of Welbeck and has to receive treatment because the winger inadvertently crashes into him.
53'
Will Rooney eventually convert one today? The United man has another great chance as he is picked out by Baines at the six yard box. He gets passed the defense with his initial touch, but can't beat Muslera. What a huge opportunity to level just seconds after Uruguay could have been up by two.
51'
Cavani has to make it two! Nicolás Lodeiro pokes that ball to the overlapping striker in the penalty area, who aims for the far post from a tight angle against an onrushing Hart but misses the goal!
49'
Luis Suárez goes for the cheeky finish again and aims directly for goal off a corner kick. Hart is there in time, but that one nearly found its way over the line.
48'
It's not that England is the inferior side so far, quite the opposite to be honest, but Hodgson's teams clearly lacks a certain punch.
47'
Costa Rica could serve as role-model for the reeling English side. They came back from a 0-1 halftime deficit with three unanswered goals against Uruguay in the second half.
46'
Second half is underway and both sides remain unchanged.
46'
Second Half begins
45'
Halftime Summary:
It has been an even half with a slight advantage for Hodgson's side, but Luis Suárez proved to be the difference so far as he scored on his sole opportunity while England's star Rooney missed two superb chances on the other end throughout. The Three Lions face elimination and have to find ways to score in the second half. Stay tuned!
45'
Half-Time
44'
One minute of stoppage time is added, but England can't create anything. Uruguay heads into the break with the lead!
43'
It's a good response from England, but an encouraging showing is not enough today. They need to score somehow.
41'
Just like against Italy, England is shaking off the blow quickly and is searching for the immediate answer! Sturridge gets through on the left side and challenges Muslera with a shot form a tight angle. The keeper deflects it around the post.
39'
Goooal for Uruguay, 1:0 by Luis Suárez
He doesn't need much chances, does he? Edinson Cavani chips the ball brilliantly from the edge of the area to an unmarked Suárez, who heads it past Hart from close range. Phil Jagielka is out of position here and loses the prolific scorer.
37'
The game is slowing down a bit, both sides can't find their way behind the opposing defense.
35'
Sturridge tries one from distance, but his wild effort is way wide.
34'
English fans make themselves heard in the stands. They have to be pleased with what they are seeing form their side, the Three Lions are only lacking a goal.
32'
England is dominant in the air on both ends, Suarez whips in a free-kick and Cahill clears.
31'
Rooney hits woodwork! Fernando Muslera is caught in no man's land at the ensueing free-kick, the ball sails over the head of the keeper and at the far post the striker heads it off the bar from close range. What a chance!
30'
Quite a lot of late challenges in the last minutes as Martín Cáceres tackles Danny Welbeck on the opposing side.
29'
Diego Godín wraps his arms around a starting Sturridge and brings the English striker down on the right side. Already penalized for a hand-ball the captain is very lucky not to be send off here.
27'
Suárez drives a corner low to Cavani at the near post, the striker goes for goal from a tight angle and misses over the bar.
26'
Slowly Uruguay manages to apply a bit more pressure on the English side and can claim more and more possession.
25'
Joe Hart safely intercepts a free-kick from the left at his far post.
23'
The pace of the game is appealing, but inaccurate passing is limiting both sides. We certainly hope for a bit more entertainment throughout.
22'
Uruguay meanwhile tries to get out in transitition, but most of the time Suárez fins himself all alone against an overwhelming number of defenders.
20'
England remains the more engaged side, but can't quite penetrate the penalty area dangerously.
17'
On the other side Steven Gerrard takes a corner, but Suárez can clear the poorly executed set-piece at the front post.
15'
Rodríguez out of nowhere! Jagielka slips at the edge of the box and therefore a cross from González finds its way to the Atlético man, who fires a hammer slightly over the crossbar from 18 yards. Best chance for Uruguay so far!
13'
The South Americans are a known physical team and have to settle for quite a lot of touchy fouls so far.
12'
Overall it's an encouraging start from the Three Lions, which try to control the game in midfield early on. Against Italy they mainly focused on counterattacks but seem ready to take matters in their own hands today.
10'
Good effort from Rooney! The United player takes the resulting free-kick and curls the ball towards the top left corner, but it's inches wide!
9'
Diego Godín (Uruguay) is shown a yellow card
The captain purposely gets a hand on the ball at the edge of the box because Daniel Sturridge threatens to slip the ball behind the defense.
7'
Uruguay heads away the set-piece and immediately gets out in transition. Suárez sends José Giménez down the right side, but the 19-year old can't break through.
7'
Both teams are still feeling out the opposition and now England has its first chance from a set-piece as Raheem Sterling is brought down on the right side.
5'
The second corner is not as thrilling because Edinson Cavani is caught in an offside position.
4'
The first corner is awarded to Uruguay, Luis Suárez delivers a low ball straight to the near post where it's cleared away for another corner. The superstar nearly caught Joe Hart and company by surprise here.
2'
Fernando Muslera fumbles an easy ball and almost gifts it to an onrushing Sturridge, but the keeper eventually recovers and claims it.
2'
Both teams still have fate in their own hands with a win today. Even the inferior side would still have an outside shot depending on Italy and Costa Rica's game tomorrow.
1'
We are underway! Both teams sport their traditional colors, England plays in white and the Celeste in light blue.
1'
Kick-Off
Who will come out on top in this battle of quality frontlines? The man at the whistle is Spanish Carlos Velasco, who will lead the teams on the field in a few minutes.
Oscar Tabárez has to shake things up as Maxi Pereira serves a suspension and skipper Diego Lugano can't help with a knee problem. Diego Godín and Martín Cáceres take over in the back four and Álvaro González and Nicolás Lodeiro get the start ahead of Walter Gargano and Christian Stuani in midfield. Veteran Diego Forlán has to make room for Luis Suárez as well after starting every match and eventually winning player of the tournament honors in South Africa 2010.
The complete lineups can be found here.
No stranger to English football, the Liverpool player can shake hands with teammates Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling and Sturridge, which all remain in Hodgson's unchanged starting lineup. Wayne Rooney remains a popular target of criticism, but the 28-year old provided the assist to Sterling's equalizer on Sunday and will move behind Sturridge after playing the previous match on the wing. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain failed a late fitness test and is still sidelined recovering from a knee injury.
Same can be said about Uruguay, who were heading into this year's edition as a popular bet to make some noise deep into the knockout stages. But Oscar Tabárez's side embarrassed themselves against underdogs Costa Rica and now face the same do-or-die situation as England. Albeit not fully recovered, superstar Luis Suárez is good to go tonight and will surely provide a major boost to the offense of the South Americans.
The two losers of the first games of group D head into a vital encounter and hope to keep their World Cup dreams alive. England comes off a promising performance with their young squad against Italy that helped to raise morale even though the Three Lions eventually lost to a Balotelli header. But there will be no morale victories today as a defeat would all but end any chance to advance to the last 16.
Janosch Ferda is providing the coverage for the game. Enjoy!
Welcome to the second of today's World Cup matches as Uruguay and England fight for their tournament life in São Paulo.
