Fulltime Summary:
What a thrilling extra time this was! Germany had difficulties with the Algerians in the first half, since the Fennec Foxes defended really well and had some opportunities to counterattack. But every time they got through, it was Manuel Neuer saving his team from conceding a goal with his sweeper-like playing style. In fact, 21 of his 59 touches were made outside the box. After the half-time break, die Mannschaft increased their pressure and created more dangerous chances, but failed to convert those. Instead, the crowd saw a pretty onesided but goalless second half. Going into extra time, it then took Joachim Löw's team only two minutes to take the lead after Schürrle finished a quick counterattack with the 1-0. The Chelsea striker's substitution for Götze proved to be the key in cracking the opposition's defense wide open, since he was also involved in the development of the 2-0. But of course the Desert Warriors also had little energy left in the extra time due to their intensive style of play in regular time. So after they conceded the first goal, the Algerians had no means to attack and generate pressure. Still, the Greens managed to score at least one goal at the very end of the match, but it didn't matter. Overall, Germany had 78:22% possession and 22:7 attempts (16:4 on target). Therefore, the Western Europeans rightfully proceed to the quarterfinals while Vahid Halilhodžić's team head home, though leaving a good impression.

Goooal for Algeria, 2:1 by Abdelmoumen Djabou
What's happening now?! Féghouli sends in a beautiful curling cross from the right wing and finds Djabou at the rear corner of the six-yard box! The 27-year-old slides into the cross and finishes into the bottom right corner of the goal. But this probably comes a little too late...
119'
Goooal for Germany, 2:0 by Mesut Özil
That's it, Germany score their second goal! Özil maintains the ball on the left edge of the box and delivers it to Schürrle. The Chelsea striker's low shot is blocked by M'Bolhi and the rebound goes to Özil. The playmaker doesn't hesitate a moment but rather fires it through two Algerian defenders on the goal line and into the back of the net!
118'
The Desert Warriors counterattack and Slimani gets near the penalty area! But Boateng can stop him with a clean sliding tackle.
117'
Kramer could've almost scored his first international goal! He's sent into the right channel of the box by Müller, but fails to convert from about seven metres distance. Subconsequently, Müller gets into the box himself and past M'Bolhi, but his pass into the back area doesn't find a teammate to convert.
115'
Féghouli dashes down the right wing and past Höwedes, but Boateng comes to the rescua and slams the ball out of play. Algeria's coach Halilhodžić immediately plays it back onto the pitch and is rewarded by the crowd with cheers.
114'
The Fennec Foxes a on their last legs, increasingly having difficulties to get to the upfront part of the pitch. The Germans look quite secure now and don't let their opponents go past them.
112'
Of course the Algerian players are exhausted after defending and running for such a long time. Therefore Mandi can't control the ball and passes it out of play at the right defending side, having a little cramp in his calf, too.
111'
Algeria have a free kick from the left and Brahimi's cross directly goes onto the goal. But Neuer stays calm and catches it easily.
109'
Schweinsteiger still seems to have some problems with his calf and has to be substituted. This isn't surprising since the 29-year-old wasn't constantly fit in the past season. Kramer comes onto the pitch and makes his first world cup appearance.
109'
Substitution (in) Germany -> Christoph Kramer
109'
Substitution (out) Germany -> Bastian Schweinsteiger
107'
Philipp Lahm (Germany) is shown a yellow card
Lahm can't stop Brahimi legally and therefore pulls down the Algerian's pants. Obviously this is penalised with a yellow card.
106'
Second Half of extra time begins
105'
Halftime Summary:
Going into extra time, it didn't take the Germans much time to score. After Schürrle's goal they didn't stop attacking, but rather tried to increase the score. Germany actually did have some additional chances, but couldn't convert any of those. Algeria should've tried to free themselves from their opposition's pressure, but didn't find a way to do so because Löw's team were too dominant. Overall die Mannschaft stayed focussed and looked fit so far, with exception of Bastian Schweinsteiger.
105'
First Half of extra time ends
104'
Schweinsteiger seems to have cramps, but surprisingly the referee doesn't grant him a chance to receive medical attendance. Because of that, the Bayern Munich midfielder has to crawl off the pitch all alone. Die Mannschaft continue to play and Khedira dashes onto the left channel of the box, but his pass into the back area doesn't find any of his teammates.
102'
Schweinsteiger puts some great ball handling on display! He maintains possession at the right sideline and passes it to Kroos.
100'
Halilhodžić makes his second substitution and replaces Soudani with Djabou.
100'
Substitution (in) Algeria -> Abdelmoumen Djabou
100'
Substitution (out) Algeria -> El Arbi Soudani
99'
Müller tries to flick the ball onto the right corner of the goal from about 20 metres distance, but his attempt goes off target.
98'
This could've gotten dangerous! Féghouli sends in a left-footed curling cross from the right corner of the box, but it misses Slimani and Soudani and goes past the left post.
97'
Halliche, who earlier in the game had a cramp, is replaced by Bougherra.
97'
Substitution (in) Algeria -> Madjid Bougherra
97'
Substitution (out) Algeria -> Rafik Halliche
96'
It looks like die Mannschaft aren't content with just one goal but actually want to score again so they don't have to be afraid of conceding the equalizer. Lahm tries to find Schürrle at the right channel of the box, but his pass is intercepted.
94'
Now the Desert Warriors have to show initiative and play more offensively. Just continuing to wait for counterattacks probably won't cut it.
92'
Goooal for Germany, 1:0 by André Schürrle
Finally, there's the leading goal for Germany! Müller maintains the ball at the left channel of the box and finds Schürrle with a lateral pass! The Chelsea striker is able to finish with his left back heel and scores from about six metres distance! Still, one has to ask why it took the Germans so long to score.
91'
Schürrle and Müller try to break through the right hand side, but handle the ball too clumsily and eventually lose it to the opposition's defenders.
91'
Play resumes without any player changes.
91'
Kick-Off extra time

Second Half Summary:
Although neither of the teams managed to score, the second half was full of tension! Germany increased their pressure and in fact did create more chances that were also more dangerous than the previous ones. Still die Mannschaft couldn't take the lead, despite of being the dominant team in this game. Algeria had only few attacking attempts after play resumed, but every time Neuer was there for the rescue. Who would've thought that this game would go to extra time?
90'
Second Half ends
90'
Although the Germans are trying and trying, it looks like we're going to extra time! But first there will be four minutes of injury time.
89'
Unbelieaveable! Neuer doesn't have to make many conventional goalkeeper saves tonight, but rather has the job of a sweeper. Again he comes to the rescue before Slimani can convert a long ball.
87'
This almost looks like a slapstick comedy! The Germans try to confuse their opposition while executing the free kick, but Müller slips and forces Kroos to take the set piece in another way, which doesn't prove effective at all.
86'
Kroos makes the corner after some retardation and first it's cleared. But then. Féghouli is penalised for playing hand ball.
84'
Özil tries to centre the ball from the left hand side, but it's blocked for a corner by Belkalem. Simultaneously, Halliche seems to sufferfrom a cramp and needs medical attendance.
82'
Müller has to score with this chance! Müller gets the ball at the right channel of the box and finishes from about eight metres distance with a sidefooted shot, but it goes past the right post.
80'
Germany fail to convert again! Müller challenges M'Bolhi with a diving header after Khedira crosses the ball from the right. The rebound goes to Schürrle, who also fails to score.
79'
Germany have a chance! Müller succeeds in breaking through the right wing and provides Schweinsteiger with a cross. But the Bayern Munich midfielder's header goes wide.
78'
Substitution (in) Algeria -> Yacine Brahimi
78'
Substitution (out) Algeria -> Saphir Taïder
77'
Will we see these teams go into extra time? For now, this seems like a possible scenario.
76'
The Fennec Foxes manage to counterattack again! However, Soudani's low cross from the left is blocked by Boateng fro a throw-in.
75'
Algeria have a shot! Slimani finishes from the edge of the penalty area, but Neuer has no difficulties in catching the ball.
73'
Halliche commits a foul and provides the Germans with a free kick from the right hand side. But die Mannschaft fails to use this opportunity, the ball is cleared away.
71'
Wow! Neuer is well known as an offensive goalkeeper who regularly leaves his goal to act as kind of a sweeper. This time he clears a long ball with a header before Slimani can reach it.
70'
Mustafi can't even walk by himself and is replaced by Khedira. This means that Lahm will take over Mustafi's position as right back, while the Real Madrid player will act as defensive midfielder.
70'
Substitution (in) Germany -> Sami Khedira
70'
Substitution (out) Germany -> Shkodran Mustafi
68'
Ouch! While trying to clear the ball, Mustafi seems to have pulled a string in his thigh and can't continue to play.
66'
It looks like the German's pressure has an effect on the Algerians, making the Fennec Foxes' defense less effective. This way Löw's team now have a little bit more space for attacking.
64'
Ghoulam sends in a long range cross from the left, but it's immediately cleared forward by Boateng. Germany don't take their time now but rather try to attack as fast as possible.
62'
After Mostefa fails to clear the ball, Lahm delivers it to Schürrle, who can'tz break through on the right, but at least gets a corner for Germany. The first one is cleared out of play and the second one comes to nothing.
60'
First, Schürrle tries to cross the ball into the box from the right, but it is headed away and back to the Chelsea player. This time he shoots directly, but it goes over the bar.
58'
The Desert Warriors maintain the ball for quite some time and are being rewarded by the crows with several "Olé" chants. But after a minute or so, die Mannschaft regains possession.
56'
It looks like the Germans are now willing to enforce the leading goal, pressuring their opposition into their half and trying to get forward with few touches.
54'
What a chance! Kroos finds Schweinsteiger with a diagonal pass into the box and the Bayern Munich midfielder lays off for Lahm. But the skipper's shot from the edge of the box misses the top right corner of the goal.
51'
There's much more movement on the pitch than in the first half, making play more fluid but also exhausting. Who will be tired first?
48'
Germany show more drive, now that Schürrle is on the pitch! First he almost converts a nice crossfield pass from Müller, but his effort is deflected and goes out of play on the left by-line. The following corner from Kroos finds Mustafi, whose header onto the bottom right corner is saved by M'Bolhi.
46'
Play resumes and Löw makes his first substitution: Chelsea forward Schürrle replaces Mario Götze on the left wing.
46'
Substitution (in) Germany -> André Schürrle
46'
Substitution (out) Germany -> Mario Götze
46'
Second Half begins
45'
Halftime Summary:
As Joachim Löw said before the game, the Desert Warriors proved to be a challenging opponent and didn't let the Germans have many chances at all. Though die Mannschaft had 69:31% possession and 9:4 attempts (6:2 on target), they failed to pressure the Algerians and create much danger in the opposition's penalty box. Instead the Fennec Foxes had some great opportunities to score after the German defense had some difficulties when pressured early. Besides, from time to time Algeria tried to find Slimani with long balls forward and managed to do so a few times. But every time, it was either Manuel Neuer saving his team from conceding a goal or the Algerian striker being offside. Still the Germans could've taken the lead at the end of the first half, but had no luck in beating Raïs M'Bolhi.
45'
Half-Time
44'
Kroos has another attempt from great distance! This time his shot misses the top left corner of the goal.
42'
Rafik Halliche (Algeria) is shown a yellow card
Halliche misses the ball with his sliding tackle and only hits Schweinsteiger's shin. Consequently, the Académica de Coimbra defender is booked for his challenge.
41'
That should've been a goal! Kroos shoots from about 28 metres distance, but M'Bolhi can parry the Bayern Munich midfielder's knuckleshot. The rebound bounces into Götze's feet, but the 22-year-old fails to beat the Algerian goalkeeper.
39'
It's a balanced game now, with both teams having some interesting attacks. Mostefa's shot from long range is blocked by Boateng and subsequently cleared away by the omnipresent Neuer.
37'
Who knew that Özil also has piledrivers in his repertoire? He's known for his gracile playing style, but his shot is a great challenge for M'Bolhi! The goalie can't catch the ball and the rebound comes to Müller, but he can't control the ball and it goes out of play.
34'
Although the Desert Warriors' long ball game looks dangerous, it still lacks precision and timing. Again, one of the Algerians is offside.
33'
Algeria have a free kick at the edge of the box, but Féghouli's attempt from the left channel isn't precise enugh and goes over the bar.
31'
That could've been a chance! Özil manages to break through the right hand side and passes into the back area, but Lahm's shot from about six metres distance is blocked.
30'
In a situation like this, a good ball handling quarterback-like defender like Hummels probably would be pretty helpful to calm down die Mannschaft. But Löw's team has to do so without the Dortmund centre back.
28'
Again Neuer has to save everything for his team! The Algerian's long balls prove to be quite a challenge for the German defence, this time it's Mertesacker having difficulties in getting the ball under control and finally losing it to Slimani. Though the centre back manages to pressure the striker, it's the keeper clearing the ball out of play with a sliding tackle.
26'
Halilhodžić's team do a great job not letting the Germans thrive on the game and creating dangerous chances for themselves.
24'
That's a dangerous cross! Again it's Özil on the left, looking to find Lahm at the right post. Instead, the ball almost goes in, but M'Bolhi can push it over the crossbar for a corner, which comes to nothing.
23'
That's not a dangerous attempt, but at least it's something! Özil's crpss from the left finds Müller, but the strikers header goes over the bar.
21'
Die Mannschaft look insecure now, losing the ball again and again. One really shouldn't underestimate the Fennec Foxes!
18'
Again they have a chance! This time Ghoulam breaks through the left hand side and shoots from there, but his shot goes wide and misses the target.
17'
The Algerian's get the ball into the back of the net, but it doesn't count! Soudani's cross from the left finds Slimani, who's able to finish with a header into the top right corner. But the forward is offside at the moment his teammate centres the ball.
16'
Feghouli could've made more out of this! He dribbles past several defenders at the right channel of the box, but his attempt from the right corner of the six-yard box goes over the bar.
14'
That's Germany's first effort! Schweinsteiger fires from about 25 metres distance, but M'Bolhi manages to punch the left-footed shot in the air and catch it afterwards.
13'
After Özil is trying to carry the ball through midfield, but is fouled by Mostefa. Germany have a free kick at the centre circle.
11'
Algeria almost have another counterattack after Boateng loses the ball, bud Mertesacker is able to regain possesion for his team.
9'
Again, Mustafis cross is intercepted and Algeria immediately attempt to counterattack! Slimani is sent forward with a long ball onto the left, but Neuer dashes out of the goal and temporarily acts as right back. The German keeper manages to block Slimani's shot with a great sliding tackle!
8'
Repeatedly, Mustafi tries to send in low crosses from the right, but fails to deliver the ball to Müller.
6'
Germany mostly keep the ball in their possession, but fail to get it near the penalty area. The Fennec Foxes are defending well and waiting to counterattack.
4'
The first minutes prove to be kind of chaotic, the ball bounces back and forth. Die Mannschaft are trying to take over control, but aren't successful in doing so, yet.
3'
The Germans have their first attacking attempt, but its ruled offside. Lahm tries to send Mustafi onto the right wing and in fact the Genoa defender is on side!
1'
The game is underway!

Kick-Off
The only player on the pitch who already was booked once in this tournament is Germany's Benedikt Höwedes. If he should receive another yellow card tonight, he would be banned for the quarterfinals, providing that his team proceeds to the next round.
Apart from 1982's WC group stage, these two nations also faced each other in a friendly match in 1964. Back then, the Desert Warriors won 2-0, so they're leading in the head to head record against Germany.
Although the Algerians don't have many famous players in their roster, there are at least three of them whose names could be familiar for European football fans: Valencia midfielder Sofiane Féghouli, Saphir Taïder (Inter Milan) and Islam Slimani (Sporting Lisbon), who already scored two goals in this WC.
Since Ramadan began on Saturday, another issue in the run-up to this game was the effect of the fasting period on the Algerian players, which Halilhodžić denied vehemently: "Stop asking me about Ramadan or I will get up and leave. When you ask the question, you lack respect and I'd like you to focus on the football and nothing else. This is not the first time I coach a team with Muslims, I'm a Muslim myself. I have always allowed the players to make their own decision."
Instead of focussing on the past, Löw turned his attention to the present and warned his players not to treat the Algerians lightly, since they are an "compact, hard-running and aggressive team,". In addition, the former Stuttgart coach also tried to lower the expectations of the German supporters: "Anyone who thinks that an easy opponent is waiting for us in the next round is making an enormous mistake."
Asked about this part of their team's history, the Algerians didn't attach much importance to it, as Tottenham's Nabil Bentaleb underlined: "To be honest, for me I was not born then. For me, this is the past. We have to make our own history and we have to write our own page. Now it's a new story." The Fennec Foxes' assistant coach Abdelhafid Tasfaout added: "We're talking about 30 years ago, you know. We don't want to look backwards, only forwards."
While Löw tried to minimize the significance of that event by stating that "most of the players weren't even born then and something which took place over 30 years ago is not really a relevant subject", his counterpart didn't think so. Vahid Halilhodžić said that "no one has forgotten what happened in 1982, the players will be motivated to get their revenge, but the Germans will also be going everything to get to the quarter-finals."
In the past few days, one of the main subjects in the media was the Algerians having revenge for their elimination in 1982's world cup. Back then, Germany and Austria proceeded to the next round after the Germans played out a mutually beneficial 1-0 win over Austria in their third game, which later on was called the "shame of Gijon". Before that, the Desert Warriors had beaten Germany 2-1.
Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels isn't able to play tonight due to being ill for some days now. German head coach Joachim Löw will replace the 25-year-old with Shkodran Mustafi, who will act as right back while Jérôme Boateng will take over Hummels' position. It was also stated that Lukas Podolski wouldn't be part of the roster, too. But actually the Arsenal winger will be sitting on the bench, despite having suffered a minor thigh injury. Mario Götze will be starting in his place.
Algeria's advancement on the other hand was kind of an upset, since most spectators expected Russia to finish second. But the Desert warriors did surprise everyone by beating South Korea 4-2 and drawing 1-1 with the Sbornaja, so the Fennec Foxes' loss in their first game against Belgium (1.2) didn't matter in the end.
The Germans came first in group G, beating Portugal 4-0 and drawing 2-2 with Ghana. Since they also won their third game against USA (1-0), die Mannschaft stayed on top of the group with seven points.
Azad Derakhshani will provide the live commentary for this match.
Welcome to the round of sixteen and tonight's match between Germany and Algeria!
