Former Germany goalkeeper Rene Adler announced Monday he will not be renewing his Hamburg contract, which expires next month, after helping avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.

"I have just told Hamburg's officials that I will not extend my contract beyond June 30," the 32-year-old Adler wrote on his Facebook page having joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2012.

"Unfortunately, I will not have a sixth year for this special club with it's unique fans."

A rib injury kept Adler out of Saturday's dramatic 2-1 win at home against Wolfsburg on the last day of the season.

A late winning header by striker Luca Waldschmidt, who scored his first Bundesliga goal the day after his 21st birthday, saw Hamburg climb out of the relegation places.

In three of Adler's five seasons with Hamburg, the club fought relegation, and sports director Jens Todt thanked him for his "performances in the Hamburg shirt".

"He has been one of the defining faces of the club over the last five years," Todt added.

The German goalkeeper has left his future open. "I do not have a Plan B, there have been no discussions with other clubs yet," said Adler.

"I will be after the summer break, I do not know yet."

Adler was Germany's first-choice goalkeeper approaching the 2010 World Cup, but fractured ribs ruled him out of the finals in South Africa.

In his absence, Manuel Neuer took over and has developed into a world-class goalkeeper.

Alder made the last of his 12 appearances for Germany in May 2013 and after 129 games for Hamburg, is now seeking new employment.

His best season with Hamburg was his first year when they finished seventh under then-coach Thorsten Fink in 2012/13.

"Hamburg has become my home and it will be after my sporting career is over," added Adler.
