Dutch women's captain Van Veenendaal retires from football

Netherlands captain and goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal announced her retirement from football on Friday at the age of 32.

Van Veenendaal helped the Dutch win Euro 2017 on home soil but was ruled out of this year's finals in England after injuring her shoulder in her team's opening game against Sweden.

"It's time to say goodbye to the game," she wrote in a post on social media.

"It's time to explore different things. It's my decision to say goodbye and this moment feels as the right moment."

Van Veenendaal won 91 caps for the Netherlands and was named the best women's goalkeeper in 2019, the same year the Dutch reached the World Cup final.

She began her career at Utrecht before spending five years at Twente. Van Veenendaal joined Arsenal in 2015 and won the Women's Super League title in her final season at the club.

Van Veenendaal played for Atletico Madrid in the 2019-20 season and then returned home for the final two years of her career with PSV Eindhoven.
