Injured Townsend withdraws from England squad

Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend has withdrawn from the England squad to face Slovenia and Scotland due to injury, the Football Association announced on Thursday.

The 23-year-old has been unable to train for the last two days due to an ankle problem sustained on club duty.

He will now miss England's Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Slovenia on Saturday and the friendly against Scotland in Glasgow three days later.

"Andros Townsend will today leave the England squad and return to his club," an FA spokesman said.

"Townsend reported for duty on Monday with a minor injury and will go back to Tottenham Hotspur for further treatment. He will miss England's games against Slovenia and Scotland."

Townsend follows Michael Carrick in pulling out of Roy Hodgson's squad. The FA announced late on Wednesday that the 33-year-old Manchester United midfielder had succumbed to a minor groin injury.
